Atletico Madrid’s coach Diego Simeone has brushed aside suggestions that there is added pressure as they strive for their first Champions League title, stating it is a matter of responsibility rather than a weighty burden ahead of their semi-final first leg against Arsenal on Wednesday.
Throughout their history, Atletico have reached three finals in the European Cup — two of which occurred during Simeone’s nearly 15-year reign — but the coveted trophy has eluded them. They remain the only side to have lost three finals without lifting the trophy.
This season has not provided much solace domestically, with the team sitting fourth in LaLiga, a daunting 25 points adrift of leaders Barcelona, and they have effectively been out of the title race since January.
A recent defeat to Real Sociedad on penalties in the Copa del Rey final has left the Champions League as Atletico’s last chance for silverware this season, potentially leading to five consecutive trophyless years.
Nonetheless, Simeone was not inclined to dwell on past disappointments following losses to Bayern Munich (1974) and Real Madrid (2014, 2016) in the finals of Europe’s premier club competition.
“There’s no pressure; it’s more about a sense of responsibility and an exciting anticipation,” he remarked during a press conference on Tuesday.
“Ultimately, it’s just a football match, and the players decide the outcome. We need to prepare thoroughly and aim to execute our game plan, putting Arsenal under pressure.”
When queried about whether Atletico deserved something from the competition after their three final losses, Simeone answered: “We’re all human, and everyone has their own view on things. However, a competition owes nothing to anyone.
“You need to earn rewards through hard work and determination, and hope that fortune favours you.”
The Argentine highlighted Atletico’s approach in knockout stages as their strongest asset.
“Our recent performances in knockout rounds, whether in the (Spanish) Cup or the Champions League… We’re playing with intensity, utilising our style, and leading the attack. That’s the way forward,” he explained.
Though the club is in pursuit of their first Champions League title, Simeone prefers tangible results over idle dreams.
“Dreaming is acceptable, but the true essence is found in what transpires on the pitch. What we do and what fate has in store for us is what truly matters,” he commented.
“This is another semi-final for us, which is remarkable as it’s our fourth in 14 years. It’s really something special.”
“That belief, that enthusiasm, that contagious spirit will be tremendously beneficial. We are gearing up for a challenging match, but we’re approaching it with optimism.”
