Jimmy Butler has finally got his wish: he’s being traded away from Miami.
The Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors have come to an agreement that will see Butler move to the Bay Area, as confirmed by a source familiar with the negotiations.
The deal is reportedly accompanied by a two-year contract extension worth approximately AUD$192 million.
This trade concludes Butler’s time in Miami, marked notably by two appearances in the NBA Finals and three suspensions that led to a tumultuous exit.
To facilitate the trade, the Warriors are sending Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schroder, Kyle Anderson, along with draft picks, to the Heat, according to the source, who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity as the trade awaits league approval.
It is still unclear whether all three players will make their way to Miami.
Golden State now becomes Butler’s fifth team, following his stints in Chicago, Minnesota, Philadelphia, and Miami. His arrivals have been widely celebrated, but his exits have often been far from seamless.

By joining the Warriors, Butler will now team up with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green – the two holdovers from Golden State’s four recent championship-winning squads, with ambitions of returning to title contention.
The breakdown of Butler’s relationship with the Heat had been escalating for months. A significant factor was financial; he was eligible for a two-year, AUD$180 million extension, but the Heat had shied away from offering it, primarily because Butler has missed around 25% of the team’s games since his arrival in 2019.
Other issues also contributed. Neither party was particularly satisfied with the other towards the end, and it became clear that the relationship was beyond repair. Butler’s challenging personality and the Heat’s culture, which thrives on a unified approach, only added to the tension.
After he indicated in early January that he didn’t foresee any on-court joy during his time with the Heat again, Butler faced a seven-game suspension for what the team deemed detrimental conduct.
This marked the beginning of an eventful conclusion to his time in Miami: Butler received three suspensions in January alone, including a two-game ban for missing a flight and an indefinite suspension following his departure from a shootaround after learning he would not start in a game against Orlando.
“A lot has been said by everyone except for me, to be honest,” Butler remarked after his first game back post-suspension. “Let’s allow people to keep talking. … The full story will eventually come out.”
Although he never directly requested a trade, at least not openly due to league regulations which could have resulted in a hefty fine, the Heat did claim that Butler had made such a request. This revelation prompted a shift in the team’s stance after president Pat Riley had previously stated in December that Butler was not to be traded; once the suspension occurred, the Heat indicated they were exploring trade options.
However, several signs pointed towards an impending change; Butler’s hair colour during certain games coincidentally matched those of the Suns, Mavericks, Warriors, and Rockets – teams often linked as potential trade partners for Miami. On at least one occasion, Butler wore shoes that matched the colours of the Suns’ kit.
This season, Butler has averaged 17 points per game. He delivered one of the finest performances in Heat history against the Detroit Pistons, scoring 35 points alongside 19 rebounds and 10 assists.
Things took a downward turn after that: in his six appearances following the Detroit game, including one where he exited early due to illness, Butler averaged only 9.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists.

However, Butler’s time in Miami wasn’t entirely negative; he was brought in to fill the pivotal role left by Dwyane Wade, becoming the face of the franchise. He even took over Wade’s former locker space.
Throughout his tenure, he earned All-Star honours twice, led the Heat to the NBA Finals in both the 2020 rubber and as an eighth seed in 2023, and delivered some breathtaking postseason performances. He is accountable for eight of the 18 40-point games in Heat playoff history, including a franchise-record 56 points against Milwaukee in 2023.
Butler exits Miami ranked third on the team’s all-time playoff scoring list, trailing only behind Wade and LeBron James.
One of Butler’s last public appearances as a Heat player was at a padel tournament on January 25, which turned out to be a sort of farewell to Miami.
“I hold this city close to my heart,” he expressed that day.
Just two days later, he faced suspension for a third and final time. Now, his chapter with the Heat has come to a close.
