The Democratic Republic of Congo has secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup (WC) for the first time in 52 years, after narrowly defeating Jamaica 1-0 after extra time in their inaugural head-to-head encounter.
The stakes were exceptionally high in this final qualifier held in Zapopan, Mexico, with both nations vying for a chance to reach the World Cup for only the second time in their histories.
Entering the match with only one defeat in their last nine outings (W6, D2), Jamaica were considered the underdogs before kick-off. The Reggae Boyz initially believed they had taken the lead just four minutes in, following a slick passing sequence that ended with Meschack Elia delivering a low cross into the six-yard area, where Cedric Bakambu directed it into the net. However, their celebrations were curtailed as the linesman quickly raised his offside flag, denying DR Congo an early advantage.
DR Congo dominated the opening exchanges, and as the quarter-hour mark approached, Bakambu nearly netted the opener. Left unmarked in the box, he headed towards goal from a Nathanael Mbuku free-kick, only to be thwarted as Andre Blake comfortably collected the ball.
It was one-sided for much of the first half, with Les Leopards repeatedly testing the Jamaican goal. However, Blake remained relatively untroubled, with many shots fired off-target. It wasn’t until the 30-minute mark that Jamaica posed a genuine threat, as Bobby De Cordova-Reid set up Kasey Palmer on the edge of the box, whose well-struck shot was blocked for a corner.
Elia then struck the woodwork for DR Congo before half-time, leaving them frustrated by their inability to convert their dominance into goals.
After the interval, Les Leopards picked up right where they had left off, with Bakambu once again coming close to finding the net. This time, he curled a shot from 20 yards that Blake did well to tip around the post.
While Jamaica found themselves defending for the majority of the match, they managed to hold their ground at 0-0 as the clock ticked on. Sebastien Desabre opted to make substitutions for a spark, and one of those brought on, Theo Bongonda, managed to breach the Jamaican defence before squaring the ball for Bakambu to tuck it into an open net. Unfortunately for the DR Congo striker, he was ruled offside for a second time.
Ultimately, neither team managed to score during regular time, leading to extra time. In the 100th minute, DR Congo finally broke the deadlock when Axel Tuanzebe bundled the ball in from close range after a corner by Brian Cipenga was deflected into his path.
Despite Jamaica’s desperate attempts to equalise, they could not penetrate the defence of Les Leopards. Even though Edo Kayembe and Bakambu squandered chances to extend the lead to 2-0, the African nation secured their place at the World Cup.
The Democratic Republic of Congo will find themselves in Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia, while Jamaica’s hopes of a second World Cup appearance will have to wait as they fall short once again.
