Daniel McStay’s unfortunate injury woes have continued, with Collingwood announcing he has sustained a medial collateral ligament sprain during the Anzac Day game against Essendon.
McStay was substituted out in the third quarter after he chased the ball into the goal square. The 29-year-old went to ground before reaching the contest, visibly expressing pain in his left knee.
In a statement, the Magpies described the situation as a “disappointing setback”.
“Unfortunately, scans confirmed this morning that Dan has incurred a moderate-grade MCL injury during yesterday’s Anzac Day match against Essendon,” stated Collingwood’s general manager of football, Charlie Gardiner.

“This injury is anticipated to sideline him for the next six to eight weeks,” Gardiner added.
“It’s certainly a frustrating setback for Dan, who has been performing well and has played a crucial role for the team this season.”
“Dan is a consummate professional and has consistently demonstrated an impressive ability to rebound from injuries throughout his career. We are optimistic that he will make a significant contribution for us in the latter part of the season.”
Previously, McStay endured an MCL injury to his right knee in 2023, which kept him out of the grand final.
He also ruptured his ACL in his left knee that same year, but made a comeback towards the end of 2024, featuring in five matches.
