Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has called for increased defensive solidity from his squad ahead of their upcoming LaLiga clash with Alaves on Sunday.
The reigning champions, currently in second place, are looking to close the gap on leaders Barcelona in the race for the Spanish title.
Madrid faced a heavy defeat, losing 3-0 to Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, and have conceded 11 goals in their last four matches across all competitions.
“There’s been a general dip in performance lately,” Ancelotti stated during a news conference on Saturday.
“We’ve been leaking goals in recent games, and it’s crucial we put an end to that, especially when our forwards aren’t firing on all cylinders.”
Barcelona will go up against Leganes on Saturday before Madrid takes on Alaves, with Ancelotti affirming that his players are concentrated on this match, despite the looming second leg against Arsenal on Wednesday.
“Our aim is to win because it’s vital to regain our confidence,” Ancelotti explained.
“While everyone is thinking about Wednesday, our performance tomorrow is what matters most.”
“Every defeat carries its own challenges; it’s tough when you lose… but thankfully, in football, a chance often presents itself after a loss.”
“The team has been training well and remains focused.”
Ancelotti acknowledged that statistics indicated his players ran less than their Arsenal counterparts during the defeat at the Emirates but insisted that wasn’t the fundamental reason for the result.
“Historically, we’ve run less in games and still secured two Champions League titles,” noted the coach, whose side successfully lifted the trophy in 2022 and 2024.
“We can certainly improve in that area, but it’s not solely about running.”
Following the setback against Arsenal, Ancelotti has faced scrutiny from the Spanish media but dismissed speculation regarding his potential exit at the season’s conclusion.
“My contract is clear-cut, and we will discuss the future after the season ends,” he said, pointing out that his current deal runs until 2026.
“The club has consistently supported me, especially during these challenging times.”
