Bayern Munich staged a remarkable comeback with two quick goals late in the game, securing a 2-1 victory over Manchester United at home on Wednesday, and advancing to the women’s Champions League semi-finals with a 5-3 aggregate win.
Melvine Malard’s opening goal set the stage for a potential extra time, putting United on track to become the first English club to claim victory in Munich.
After relentlessly attacking United’s goal since Malard’s early strike, Bayern found the breakthrough in style, as Glodis Viggosdottir and Linda Dallmann both found the net within the last 10 minutes of play.
This result dashed United’s aspirations of reaching their first Champions League semi-final and placed Bayern on a collision course with likely title challengers, Barcelona.
Bayern had fought hard to secure a 3-2 win at Old Trafford, featuring a stellar performance from lifelong United supporter Pernille Harder, giving the German side an advantage heading into the second leg.
However, just 11 minutes into the match, Malard capitalised on a defensive blunder from Bayern to give United the lead on the night, thus equalising the aggregate score.
Jayde Riviere sent a ball forward, but Bayern goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic misjudged the clearance, allowing Malard to seize the opportunity and slide the ball into the unguarded net.
United’s defence held firm against a barrage of Bayern attacks.
Harder nearly equalised with a critical save required from United’s goalkeeper, Phallon Tullis-Joyce, early in the second half.
Germany’s captain, Giulia Gwinn, came close just before the 15-minute mark of the final quarter.
The breakthrough finally arrived after 81 minutes when Viggosdottir nodded in a rebound from Bayern’s 13th corner.
Bayern wasted no time in sealing the game just three minutes later, as Dallmann unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box that flew past Tullis-Joyce and into the top corner.
This victory propels Bayern into the semi-finals for the first time since 2021, where they are expected to face off against the Spanish champions Barcelona, who previously dominated them 7-1 in the group stages.
Barcelona has reached the last five Champions League finals, winning three times. In their opening quarter-final leg, they thoroughly outclassed Spanish rivals Real Madrid with a decisive 6-2 win, with the return fixture set to take place on Thursday.
