Bayern Munich secured a thrilling 2-1 victory against Real Madrid, the 15-time UEFA Champions League (UCL) champions, in the first leg of their prestigious quarter-final showdown. This result positions Die Roten as the frontrunners to reach the semi-finals for a remarkable 22nd time.
The iconic Bernabeu, combining both modernity and a rich footballing heritage, set the stage for a clash between the two clubs with the most success at this level. The first half delivered, showcasing the extraordinary talent present on both sides right from the outset.
Bayern started stronger and were left in disbelief when Dayot Upamecano failed to connect with Harry Kane’s header from mere yards away.
However, the home side quickly transitioned to counterattack mode, with Manuel Neuer called into action to thwart Kylian Mbappe after a clever pass from Arda Guler.
This wouldn’t be the last time Bayern’s legendary goalkeeper featured prominently in the highlights of the half; his subsequent save from Mbappe was only outdone by a spectacular diving stop that denied a fierce shot from Vinicius Junior aimed at the bottom right corner.
Despite these close calls, it would be unfair to claim that the visitors didn’t merit their opening goal, which stunned the Bernabeu crowd just five minutes before the break. A swift exchange of passing that sliced through Madrid’s defence ended with a pinpoint through ball from Serge Gnabry, allowing Luis Diaz to slot the ball into the net.
And before the home fans could settle back into their seats, Bayern intensified their torment, with a dazzling run from Michael Olise leading to him laying the ball off for Kane, who calmly found the net from the edge of the area just 30 seconds after the restart.

While Lunin did manage to keep out a couple of Olise’s attempts in the aftermath, it wasn’t long before the hosts started to find their rhythm.
Madrid were handed a golden opportunity when Upamecano’s miscue fell to Vinicius, but the Brazilian faltered when faced with Neuer and failed to score, with Mbappe’s curled shot also just missing the target.
Eventually, that sustained pressure paid off with just 15 minutes left on the clock, as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s low cross found Mbappe at the far post, and his finish crossed the line despite Neuer’s valiant effort to intervene.
More opportunities predictably came for Los Blancos from that point, but they were unable to avoid suffering just their second defeat in nine meetings with Bayern.
The goals either side of half-time put Die Roten firmly in control of the tie, marking them as early contenders for a seventh UCL title.
