Bayern Munich will be aiming to replicate their goal-scoring frenzy when they face defending champions PSG in the return leg of their Champions League semi-final next week. Tuesday’s exhilarating 5-4 defeat in France has set a new record for the highest number of goals in a last-four match of the tournament.
Bayern initially surged ahead but found themselves trailing 5-2, compelling them to fight back with two goals in the second half during a nail-biting nine-goal thriller.
“More. Even more,” stated Bayern’s manager Vincent Kompany when asked what the fans can look forward to in the upcoming leg.
“We will be playing at home, with 75,000 supporters in the stadium. We don’t want just noise; we need a roaring atmosphere. This ground is no stranger to moments of triumph with this team,” Kompany added.
In his second season with Bayern, the Belgian has witnessed his team, in pursuit of a treble, break numerous goal-scoring records.
Having already clinched the Bundesliga title, Bayern has established a new league benchmark with an impressive 113 goals, with three matches still to play. This surpasses the previous record of 101 goals set during the 1971/1972 season that had stood for over fifty years.
Additionally, it marks the first occasion where three Bayern players—Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Diaz—have each tallied 10 or more goals and assists in a single Champions League campaign.
England’s captain Kane, who found the net on Tuesday, has scored 13 goals in the tournament, while also topping the Bundesliga scoring charts with 33 goals to his name.
Bayern is also gearing up to face Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 23.
“Conceding five goals in the Champions League usually spells disaster, but we managed to score four in Paris,” Kompany remarked. “We have proven our ability to find the back of the net, and we’re confident we can do the same at home.”
“We are well aware: the second leg is at our ground, and we need to secure a win,” Kompany declared. “We often achieve that at home, and with the backing of our fans, we certainly have the belief.”
