The atmosphere in Cape Town was electric, but Bafana Bafana fell short of expectations as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Panama in their friendly match as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
The game was less open compared to Friday’s encounter, yet once again, Panama capitalised on a few opportunities and demonstrated clinical finishing.
This marked Bafana’s first home defeat under the stewardship of Hugo Broos, and defensive lapses at critical moments proved costly.
Crucial First Half Miss
The first half yielded limited chances, but the standout opportunity fell to Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who may have squandered his World Cup chance. Making his first international appearance since November 2023, Hlongwane’s selection as a surprise starter did not pay off as he wasted a significant chance. He found himself in a tremendous position on the right side of the box but, with only the goalkeeper to beat, his shot lacked power and veered wide of the near post.

Foster Goes Scoreless Again
After criticism for his missed opportunities during Friday’s 1-1 draw, Lyle Foster had minimal chances in the 45 minutes he played this time. He was substituted at halftime for Evidence Makgopa, having been starved of service and perhaps managing only a half-chance he couldn’t quite convert. While Friday’s game might have been on him, Tuesday’s lack of goals was more indicative of his teammates’ performance.
Scrappy but Effective
Panama took the lead in the 58th minute during what was basically their first genuine attack. Bafana Bafana struggled to deal with a set-piece, which resulted in a scramble in the box where Jose Cordoba, the Norwich City defender, managed to poke the ball past substitute goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner. The goalkeeper misjudged a shot he should have claimed, hence he shares some responsibility for the goal. However, the defending was lacklustre.
What a Strike!
Bafana equalised at 64 minutes with an absolute cracker of a goal that showcased Themba Zwane’s immense skill, who made an instant impact after coming off the bench. He set up Mbekezeli Mbokazi from 25 yards out, and the centre-back unleashed a powerful shot that left the Panama keeper with no chance. Few players in world football can hit the ball as hard as Mbokazi.
Panama Seals the Win
Panama regained the lead as Bafana failed to manage crosses into the area. Just when it appeared the danger had been averted, Puma delivered a pinpoint cross to the back post where Jiovany Ramos headed home unchallenged. It was cleverly executed, but Bafana’s fundamental defensive errors were evident.
Remarkable Atmosphere
From the stirring rendition of the national anthem to a packed stadium singing throughout the match, the atmosphere in Cape Town was unparalleled for Bafana Bafana. It begs the question as to why they don’t play more often in Cape Town; one could speculate a combination of financial and political factors. Nevertheless, when they do play in the Mother City, the crowds certainly show up.
