On Friday, Atletico Madrid’s manager Diego Simeone showered accolades on Alexander Sorloth, praising the Norwegian forward’s capacity to impact a match from the substitutes’ bench in the lead-up to their LaLiga clash against Las Palmas.
Sorloth, who joined from Villarreal for a reported fee of €32 million in August, has often found himself in the shadows of Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann this season.
Nonetheless, the 29-year-old has found the back of the net 12 times in the league, scoring approximately every 96 minutes.
“I’m really pleased with his performance, and I make sure he knows that,” Simeone conveyed to the media.
“What he’s contributing, whether starting or coming off the bench to turn games around that aren’t going our way… That’s what he’s here for. He’s a striker who thrives in and around the penalty area.”
“Match scenarios can change quickly, and he’s fulfilling his role, proving to be vital for the team.”
Currently sitting third in the league with 63 points from 31 matches, Atletico is aiming to close the gap on Barcelona and Real Madrid with a win against the relegation-threatened Las Palmas on Saturday.
“Las Palmas have a coach who does an excellent job. He knows how to handle these situations,” Simeone stated.
“They’ve been competitive, which is crucial. We understand their situation and our own requirements. They play direct football and have rapid transitions with skilled players.”
“(Striker) Fabio Silva possesses great physicality. His effort in attack is commendable. Any coach would value what he brings to the team.”
Atletico will have the services of forward Angel Correa available against Las Palmas after the Argentine international served his five-match suspension for improper conduct towards a referee during a league defeat at Getafe in March.
“We’ve certainly felt his absence. He’s a player who has consistently shown over the years that he can be a game-changer when he’s on the pitch, bringing a lot to the table,” Simeone remarked.
“During his suspension, we’ve trained diligently every day, and he’s shown the same commitment to the team as always…”
