The NFL has made history with its recent announcement of a regular-season game set for the MCG, potentially leaving the venue unavailable for the AFL next September and creating a significant challenge for the end of the season.
This morning (AEDT), the NFL confirmed that the LA Rams will face an as-yet-unnamed opponent at the MCG in 2026.
While no specific date has been provided, NFL Executive Vice President Peter O’Reilly indicated that the opening weekend of the first round is the most probable timing.
Both leagues have yet to finalise their 2026 schedules, but the 2025-2026 NFL season is slated to kick off on the first weekend in September, coinciding with the AFL’s finals weekend.

Although the AFL schedule incorporates a bye week before the finals, the NFL is expected to need exclusive access to the MCG for at least the week leading up to the event, compelling the AFL to relocate matches away from its premier venue for at least one week before and after the bye.
One possible solution for the AFL would be to extend its season by one week, allowing it to shift games away from the ground during the final home-and-away round, which would also clear the way for the NFL during the bye week.
This adjustment, however, could result in the grand final being moved from its traditional last Saturday in September date to October.
Speaking in New Orleans in advance of Monday morning’s (AEDT) Super Bowl, Victoria’s sports minister Steve Dimopoulos confirmed the AFL had been part of the discussions.
“This is a significant moment for both Australia and Melbourne, and it should not be underestimated,” he told journalists, including representatives from Wide World of Sports.
“I have immense respect for the AFL’s collaboration with us in securing this announcement.”
O’Reilly noted that the collaboration with the AFL was crucial in bringing this agreement to fruition.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the AFL’s partnership. They’re a vital part of this discussion,” he stated.
“I believe this relationship can extend beyond merely sharing the same venue. It’s an opportunity for both leagues to exchange best practices and learn from one another.
“The AFL is an exceptional league, and we can gain insights from each other. This partnership is crucial for us.”
In a statement provided to Wide World of Sports, the AFL was unable to outline a potential contingency plan should the NFL’s MCG booking compel a reassessment of their schedule.
“We have a long-standing history of collaborating with governments and venues to facilitate major sporting and cultural events,” a spokesperson declared.
“We will continue to work closely to ensure that arrangements are made for our AFL supporters and the broader community to enjoy the best of both worlds.”
