The opening leg of the Champions League semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich promised an enthralling spectacle, and it certainly lived up to expectations.
For many fans of football, this semi-final is viewed as a pivotal clash where the future winner of this season’s UEFA Champions League may emerge, no disrespect intended towards Arsenal and Atletico. Following Tuesday night’s thrilling contest, that sentiment is hard to dispute.
High Entertainment Value
Just a year prior, the football community was enthralled by the semi-final matches between Barcelona and Inter Milan, widely regarded as the pinnacle of that phase in the competition. However, in the 90+ minutes played in Paris, PSG and Bayern may have just raised the bar. The game was frenetic at times, but the level of entertainment on offer is going to be difficult to surpass.

With Bayern Munich scoring in every UCL encounter this season and PSG finding the net in their previous eight fixtures, goals were always on the cards.
Bayern, led by Vincent Kompany, boasted an impressive 15-match unbeaten run in away games, indicating that if PSG were to prevail, they would have to be at the peak of their game.
Kane’s Early Goal Poses Threat to PSG
The league match in November saw Bayern clinch a victory in Paris with two first-half goals from Luis Diaz, resulting in a 2-1 win—incidentally, a match that witnessed the Colombian’s red card for a reckless two-footed tackle on Achraf Hakimi.
Harry Kane’s expertly converted penalty in the 17th minute reignited thoughts of another potential triumph in the French capital, after Willian Pacho had brought down Diaz in the box.
This marked PSG’s 11th first-half goal conceded in the competition, placing them behind only Barcelona (12) and Qarabag (15) as teams with the highest number of first-half goals allowed in this season’s UCL.
Kane’s 13th goal in the UCL this season meant trouble for the hosts, given that Bayern had won all nine of their European encounters in 25/26 after taking the lead.
Brilliant Finish from Kvaratskhelia
Michael Olise was causing considerable issues for PSG, and had his shot found the back of the net shortly thereafter rather than being cleared off the line, the visitors could have built a more substantial lead over PSG.
While defensive efforts from both teams appeared secondary to their attacking ambitions, Nuno Mendes was hard at work stifling Bayern’s rhythm.

By the time he was substituted later in the game, Kvaratskhelia had excelled in four out of five one-on-one duels, proving to be a formidable obstacle for the Bavarians in the final third.
Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finally began to hit their stride, with Kvaratskhelia igniting the scoring with a stunning right-footed curler in the 24th minute.
Neves and Olise Find the Net
This goal ignited a surge of energy in the hosts, leading to Neves netting with a brilliant header from a corner taken by Dembele just moments later. Doue, Mendes, and Dembele all had attempts at goal, as the French powerhouses threatened to overwhelm their opponents.
By that point, Bayern’s Aleksandar Pavlovic had attempted four tackles—the highest of any player on the pitch, showcasing the shift in play’s momentum. Pavlovic then assisted Olise, who drilled a sensational equaliser with his second shot on target.
This exemplified Pavlovic’s impressive night, finishing with a 95.4% successful pass rate, keeping PSG’s Vitinha on high alert throughout the match.
In contrast, Vitinha’s 85.7% completion rate was below his usual standards, largely due to Pavlovic’s relentless efforts. The young defender reclaimed possession ten times—more than any other player on either side.
Controversial Penalty Decision
As the teams continued to exchange blows, Dembele secured a half-time lead for PSG with a contentious penalty just before the interval, after Alphonso Davies was deemed to have handled the ball unfairly. Despite an electric first-half display, the Ballon d’Or winner managed only four passes in the first 45 minutes, with a total of just eight overall—by far the lowest of all starters.
The spatial awareness and movement from both teams were often a delight to witness, culminating in a dynamic move that led to Kvaratskhelia scoring again, smashing home his tenth goal of the season before the hour mark.
Hakimi provided the assist, marking his seventh in this season’s UCL, more than any of his teammates, while also accounting for his sole touch in Bayern’s area throughout the game.
Dembele Extends Lead but Bayern Response Comes
Hakimi’s forays down the flanks are a crucial aspect of PSG’s strategy. His 10 passes in the final third were second only to Vitinha’s, and he registered 14 duels, created two chances, and boasted a 91.3% pass success rate on the night—a commendable performance from the attacking right-back.
PSG was not finished as just two minutes later, Dembele appeared to have put the game beyond Bayern’s reach with the hosts’ fifth goal.
This pivotal moment meant that, with an hour gone, the semi-final already had as many goals as any other in the UCL’s storied history.
In a swift response, Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano, having been sluggish on defence when Dembele found the net, headed in their third goal on the opposite end.

This goal reflected his solid defensive contributions: three successful tackles and three interceptions, instilling new hope for the visitors.
The sense of hope swiftly transformed into joy when Luis Diaz put a nail in the coffin with a well-placed shot for Bayern’s fourth, sending the Parc des Princes into a hush.
This marked the 100th goal for Bayern’s front three this season, likely becoming the most crucial for the Colombian as it, coupled with Bayern’s 77% possession in the 15 minutes surrounding the goal, slightly tipped the scales back in their favour.
Although no further goals were scored, both sides exhibited a relentless pursuit of victory, and with both Kompany and Luis Enrique suggesting we can expect more excitement in the second leg, it’s clear that football remains the true winner.
