Fremantle winger Nathan O’Driscoll has candidly shared his struggles with anxiety and “deep depressive states” in a heartfelt social media message, disclosing that he has come “extremely close” to taking his own life on three separate occasions.
In his post, O’Driscoll encouraged followers to “reach out, stay connected, and be kind to yourself”.
This poignant Instagram message follows Carlton midfielder Elijah Hollands’ recent hospital admission after experiencing a mental health episode during the match against Collingwood at the MCG on April 16.
It also comes in the wake of the tragic death of Jaryd, the brother of Adelaide captain Jordan Dawson, who went missing in regional South Australia earlier in April, with police later confirming that a body discovered in the search was not being treated as suspicious.
O’Driscoll, who has participated in 40 AFL matches for Fremantle, mentioned that he initially didn’t intend to share this, but felt compelled to do so amid “the recent focus on mental health in the league”.

“In the last four years, I’ve experienced incredible highs alongside some very low points. I’ve battled anxiety, a persistent feeling of needing to belong, and often placed others’ needs above my own,” O’Driscoll shared.
“There were times I found myself in deep depressive states, on three occasions coming alarmingly close to taking my own life.”
“I share this because it’s important to speak out. There’s no judgement, as every person I’ve confided in has supported me in unexpected ways.
“From the outside, it may seem like I have it all together, yet what’s happening inside can tell a vastly different story. Everyone faces their own struggles, and it’s completely fine not to be okay.”
He expressed that while he has always aimed to be “positive and selfless”, he’s learnt that “it’s acceptable to prioritise yourself sometimes”.
“Valuing yourself is just as crucial as valuing those around you,” he stated.
“The past few weeks have been particularly challenging following the loss of someone dear to me, but leaning on my family, friends, and teammates has been invaluable. I’m incredibly thankful for the people surrounding me. There is so much goodness in this world, and whatever you’re experiencing, it will improve.”
“Reach out, maintain those connections, and be gentle with yourself.
“You are loved. You are acknowledged. You are heard.
“Much love,
“Nath ❤️.”
Fellow AFL player Mason Cox, who made the move from Collingwood to Fremantle in the off-season, posted: “Love you, mate! ❤️ Always here for you, bro.”
O’Driscoll is the sibling of Fremantle AFLW star Emma O’Driscoll and former Western Bulldogs player Aiden O’Driscoll.
Aiden expressed his support with, “We all love you Nath. I’ll always be here for you, you’re the best big brother anyone could want ❤️ You truly are a wonderful person, mate 🤩.”
Accompanying his Instagram post, O’Driscoll included photos with friends and family.
The fierce local rivals of Fremantle, the West Coast Eagles, responded with a purple love heart, reflecting the Dockers’ primary colour.
