World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka has suffered her second defeat of 2026, eliminated from the Madrid Open semi-finals by American Hailey Baptiste.
Baptiste – who had never before triumphed over a top-five player – saved six match points in a dramatic 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(6) victory that spanned two and a half hours on Wednesday morning (AEST).
Despite hitting 10 double faults, facing 17 break points, and serving at merely 55 per cent, Baptiste managed to pull off a stunning upset.
Going into this match, Sabalenka had only dropped three sets in fifteen matches since her loss to Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open final.

Initially, Sabalenka appeared headed for yet another convincing win, quickly taking the first set in under 40 minutes.
However, Baptiste, 24, rallied in the second set, firing six aces and converting four out of five break points, forcing the match into a tense third set.
While trailing 5-4, Baptiste saved five match points and a sixth during the tiebreak. She sealed her place in the WTA 1000 semi-finals with a sensational forehand winner that found the back corner.
“These are moments that can define a career,” remarked commentator Kevin Skinner.

“To knock off the world No.1 and secure a place in your first WTA 1000 semi-final is the biggest win of her career.”
Baptiste appeared to pause for a moment before the reality of her victory sank in, then erupted with excitement. The final set was nearly as lengthy as the first two combined.
In a match that exemplified the tight contest, Sabalenka won 104 points compared to Baptiste’s 103.
Next up, Baptiste faces another top-10 player in the semi-finals, Mirra Andreeva, who triumphed over Leylah Fernandez in straight sets earlier on local time.
