Auckland FC secured a home elimination final thanks to Guillermo May’s late equaliser against Sydney FC in the final match of the regular season.
Having been strong contenders to Newcastle for much of the year, missing out on a top-two finish is somewhat disappointing for Auckland.
Nando Pijnaker, defender for Auckland and the All Whites, expressed their desire to make amends during the Isuzu UTE A-League Finals Series launch on Monday.
“This is football. While it’s disappointing not to secure an immediate semi-final spot, our goal remains the same: to win the Grand Final, which means we must overcome the top teams,” he said.

“If we keep winning, we will win the championship as that is our aim. It all starts against Melbourne City.”
“These are must-win matches. We understand that a loss means we’re out of the competition.”
“We’re going into this match focused and determined to win it. Our home ground should help, and we hope for a strong turnout from our fans to support us as we aim to go all the way, starting this Saturday.”

On their part, Melbourne City headed into the final round of the season as the form team, boasting an unbeaten streak of six matches.
However, a heart-wrenching last-minute goal from Adelaide sent them on a more difficult path in their quest to defend their championship, having to face Auckland first.
“We’ve done it before. We’ve played in tough environments and gained confidence from our successes in away matches during the Asian Champions League,” said Melbourne City captain and Socceroo Aziz Behich.
“We’ll need the right mentality, energy, and game plan to succeed.”
“Finals football is different from standard league matches. It’s a one-off game, and while it will be challenging against a good opponent, our recent form gives us optimism.”

“We’ve seen significant improvement in the past few months since the Asian Champions League ended and have been achieving great results.”
“We’re heading into this match with confidence and hopefully will have some players back from injury, which will bolster our squad. It’s an exciting time.”
These teams last clashed at the end of February, with Auckland winning 3-0 thanks to goals from Logan Rogerson, Jesse Randall, and Uruguayan striker May.

Melbourne Victory could have finished anywhere from second to sixth with two rounds remaining but ended up in a central position.
Arthur Diles’ squad did their part in the last round with a 2-0 win against Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium, but other results saw them land in fourth place.
Nonetheless, this result awarded them a home fixture for the Elimination Finals, a significant advantage according to captain Roderick Miranda, especially in a Big Blue showdown against old adversaries Sydney FC.

“The Big Blue is always a significant match, and with finals approaching, its importance is amplified,” said Miranda during Monday’s Finals Series launch.
“Everyone at the club, and indeed across the league, expects to see a huge crowd supporting us.”
“We recognise that home support is crucial to our success. Playing in front of our fans gives us a substantial advantage.”
This upcoming clash also marks Sydney FC coach Patrick Kisnorbo’s return to AAMI Park as an opposing manager since his abrupt departure from Victory in 2024.
Kisnorbo initially took on the role under a three-year contract but opted to join J1 League club Yokohama F. Marinos as an assistant coach to former England assistant Steve Holland after just seven matches.
This decision disgruntled Victory supporters at the time, but looking ahead to the reunion, Miranda insists that the players hold no grudges against their former coach.
“The occasion transcends any rivalry with a former coach or team,” Miranda reflected when asked about facing Kisnorbo.
“The Big Blue speaks for itself. Patrick is a decorated coach in Australia, and his resume reflects that.”
“We’re in for an attacking match from both teams, aiming to score and put on a show for our fans. The Big Blue is always intense, and with finals nearing, it’ll be even more challenging.”
Fit-again Juan Mata is expected to play a significant role this weekend at AAMI Park.

The Spanish World Cup winner has emerged as one of the top players this season and made a comeback from an elbow injury against the Wanderers.
“We feel fortunate to have Juan Mata on our roster,” Miranda stated.
“The league and the fans are also lucky to witness his legendary performances. His assists, goals, and magical moments have been invaluable this season.”
“He’s eager to play again, and we’re optimistic that he can return to peak fitness. When the team is fully fit, it benefits everyone, and having Juan back is a massive boost for us, our fans, and the league overall.”

On the other side, Sydney FC, like Victory, fluctuated within the top six in the latter stages of the season.
The Sky Blues had a chance to finish second on the final day but squandered two leads against Auckland FC, resulting in missing out on a home Elimination Final.
Nevertheless, Sydney FC is relishing the opportunity to visit AAMI Park and try to upset their old rivals while securing a Semi-Final spot, with captain Rhyan Grant aware of the importance of a Big Blue encounter.
“It’s very exciting, to be honest,” said Grant when discussing the upcoming match.

“Historically, our encounters with Victory in the Finals Series have been heavily contested and entertaining. It’s always tough going to Melbourne and facing them at AAMI Park, so we’ll be challenged, but we’re looking forward to it.”
“Winning against Victory is always special, be it in the league or during the Finals Series.”
Having secured their place in the Finals Series a fortnight prior, Sydney FC enters the final stretch of the season feeling somewhat like underdogs, owing to their inconsistent performances.
However, since Kisnorbo took charge, Sydney FC has remained unbeaten, managing one win and three draws, indicating they certainly possess the firepower to trouble any opposition.
“Sydney FC has a tradition of performing well in these situations,” remarked Grant.

“To miss out on finals last year was disappointing, so being back in contention feels great as it meets our club’s expectations.”
“Since Patrick came on board, we’ve fortified our defence and established a good foundation. Our focus now is on improving scoring opportunities at critical moments.”
In their last encounter, Sydney FC made a comeback from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Melbourne Victory.
