Jarome Luai, halfback for the Tigers, has been sighted in Papua New Guinea as the Chiefs make a concerted effort to entice him as their flagship signing.
Despite being under contract until the end of 2029 for a deal worth $1.2 million a season, Luai holds an option in his contract for the upcoming year with the Tigers.
According to Danny Weidler from Nine, Luai was seen touring Port Moresby alongside Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson and general manager Michael Chammas.
Images of Luai have surfaced on social media, reportedly showing him in the capital of Papua New Guinea.
The Sydney Morning Herald indicates that Luai has until April 30 to decide if he wants to exercise his option to remain with the Tigers for next season, while the Chiefs won’t be joining the competition until 2028.
If Luai were to make the switch to the Chiefs in 2028, it would mean he only saw through three years of his five-year contract with the Tigers.

The Chiefs have yet to secure any player signings, but it’s anticipated that Kumuls representative Alex Johnston may be one of their first recruits.
Toby Rudolf has shown interest in representing Papua New Guinea and will be a free agent after this season.
The prospect of tax-free contracts is likely to attract numerous players, with Brisbane Broncos lock Patrick Carrigan having previously indicated he wouldn’t dismiss a possible move.
