Christian Eriksen, the Danish international midfielder renowned for his role in Tottenham’s celebrated era that culminated in a Champions League final appearance seven years ago, expresses his anguish over seeing his former club grappling with relegation. However, he remains confident in their ability to avoid the drop, citing the squad’s undeniable talent.
As a pivotal figure during Tottenham Hotspur’s most prosperous recent period—often referred to as the Pochettino era, spanning from approximately 2014 to 2019—Christian Eriksen left a lasting legacy.
He earned Tottenham’s Player of the Year award twice and was honoured with a place in the 2017–18 PFA Team of the Year. Over his six-year stint between 2013 and 2020, Eriksen made 305 appearances, netting 69 goals and contributing 88 assists.
Currently battling to avoid relegation in the German Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, Eriksen continues to keep a close eye on his former club. In a recent interview with Viaplay, he conveyed his disappointment at witnessing their struggles this season.
“It’s painful to watch from afar. It’s frustrating. I really hope they can pull through because a club like Tottenham deserves to be in the Premier League. That’s a certainty.”
“I’m eager to see if they can turn it around. I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they succeed. They possess too much talent to go down, yet that’s often the sentiment surrounding teams facing relegation. Individually and collectively, they are too good to be relegated.”
At present, Tottenham have amassed 31 points from 33 matches and find themselves two points adrift of West Ham United, who are just above the relegation zone. With five games left in the season, Spurs are fighting hard to secure their Premier League status as Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers have already faced relegation.
