The Broncos are currently facing a significant injury crisis that has severely impacted their middle forwards and spine. However, Andrew Johns has pinpointed an additional challenge that could hinder their chances against the Bulldogs this Friday night.
Brisbane is set to take on a Bulldogs team that experienced “humiliation” at the hands of the Eels in round seven, and a notable trend across the league indicates a bounce-back performance is likely as they come to Suncorp Stadium.
“Bulldogs, Bulldogs, wow, what happened against Parramatta?” questioned Brad Fittler during his segment on Wide World of Sports’ Freddy and the Eighth’s Tips.

The Bulldogs fell 38-20 to a Parramatta team that was grappling with its own injury challenges and had been performing poorly before the match.
Just a week after defeating the competition favourites, Penrith, Canterbury delivered what can only be described as their worst display of the season.
“They were outperformed in the crucial areas,” Johns stated. “This is unusual for them, as they typically excel in those areas. Last week they received a wake-up call; they were thoroughly humiliated.”
“In the past two weeks, we’ve seen teams suffer heavy defeats – the Dolphins to Manly and then the Eels a fortnight ago against the Titans, only to bounce back with strong performances afterward.”

After a heavy loss to the Sea Eagles, the Dolphins came back with a remarkable effort against the Panthers, pushing them to golden point in Darwin. Similarly, Parramatta was lacklustre in a 52-10 defeat to the Gold Coast before turning it around to upset the Bulldogs.
Recent trends have shown teams often recover from dismal performances with renewed dedication the following week.
Johns noted that this trend, combined with Brisbane’s alarming injury list – as evidenced by Sam Thaiday selecting a Brisbane team that he believes could outperform the current squad – could significantly impact Brisbane’s chances.
“With the Broncos missing key middle players like Payne Haas, (Pat) Carrigan, and also Corey Jensen, as well as Reece (Walsh) at fullback, I believe the Dogs will come away with the win,” concluded Johns.
Except for Fittler, all of Nine’s expert analysts have sided with Johns’ prediction. Fittler expressed confidence in the Broncos’ remarkable defensive display against the Tigers, suggesting they could similarly rise to the occasion at home against the Dogs.
“Their defence was outstanding, and they had multiple chances to score but capitalised when it mattered most,” Fittler remarked.
