Chelsea’s ambitions of securing Champions League qualification appear to be dashed following a hefty 3-0 away loss to Brighton. This disappointing result leaves the Blues with just one win in their last nine matches across all competitions, marking the longest goal drought in Premier League history for the club.
The recent lacklustre performances from Chelsea have resulted in four consecutive Premier League defeats, during which they have yet to find the back of the net. While they managed to be competitive in previous outings, the same cannot be said for their dismal first half against a determined Brighton side.
Brighton wasted no time in applying pressure, with Robert Sanchez forced to intervene just two minutes in, parrying Kauro Mitoma’s header over the bar. The Seagulls took the lead from the resulting corner.
A mistimed clearance from Jorrel Hato inadvertently gifted the ball to Ferdi Kadioglu, whose shot deflected off Wesley Fofana and found its way into the net.
With their tails up, Brighton dominated possession and created numerous additional chances. Jan Paul van Hecke had Sanchez scrambling with a fingertip save, shortly before Georginio Rutter curled a shot narrowly wide.
Only Jake Hinshelwood knows how he didn’t extend the lead midway through the first half, as a poor pass from Sanchez permitted Yankuba Minteh to set up the midfielder, only for Trevoh Chalobah to clear off the line.
As the first half ebbed away, Chelsea showed a slight improvement but still couldn’t muster a shot on target, failing to satisfy the frustrated away fans.
It wasn’t until the 47th minute that the visitors finally registered their first shot, when Romeo Lavia fired just over.
However, their hopes of a comeback were swiftly crushed when Brighton countered after a Chelsea attack and Hinshelwood struck, making amends for his earlier miss.
Mitoma came close next, volleying wide from a corner as Brighton looked to pile further misery on Liam Rosenior and his team.
Kadioglu had two chances to secure his second goal, but Sanchez was equal to both efforts this time.
Ultimately, this match was a comfortable victory for Brighton, boosting their own European qualification hopes, and they capped off the performance with a late goal from substitute Danny Welbeck in injury time.
Brighton deserve significant praise, having won six of their last eight Premier League fixtures. Meanwhile, Chelsea face significant scrutiny, suffering five consecutive Premier League losses for the first time since 1993, and it’s the first time in 114 years they have gone this long without scoring.
On Sunday, Chelsea will at least have the distraction of an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley, though it remains to be seen if Rosenior, who was subjected to expletive-laden chants during the second half, will retain his position.
