In a stunning turn of events, the Melbourne Demons claimed a narrow victory over the reigning champions, the Brisbane Lions, securing a crucial four points in a thrilling contest that ended 16.8 (104) to 15.12 (102).
However, the hard-fought triumph was marred by a serious incident involving Demons defender Harrison Petty.
During the third quarter, Petty attempted to clear the ball from his defensive zone, inadvertently kicking it straight into the hands of Brisbane’s Will Ashcroft, who promptly took the mark and was ready to convert a goal.
At this moment, 26-year-old Petty appeared suddenly unsteady, raising alarm as he fell to one knee while team-mate Blake Howes rushed to his aid.
Despite showing no clear signs of a collision beforehand, Petty required assistance from medical staff and was escorted from the field as play was halted.
The club later reported that he would not return to the game, initially labelling his condition as a “delayed concussion.”

Melbourne coach Steven King stated that the club is working to ascertain the exact cause of Petty’s sudden dizziness, indicating a potential unnoticed blow earlier in the match.
“He mentioned experiencing some blurred vision,” King noted.
“After receiving that ball in the goal square, he thought ‘perhaps I should have signalled for the game to stop’. Whether it was something more serious or a delayed concussion, we will investigate further.”
King confirmed that comprehensive medical evaluations will be undertaken to gauge the full extent of Petty’s injuries.

The unexpected nature of Petty’s situation raised immediate concerns among commentators at Fox Footy, with Matt Hill and Corbin Middlemas remarking on the visible worry shown by Petty’s teammates.
“He appears to be in a difficult spot, and his teammates are clearly concerned for his wellbeing,” Middlemas observed.
“He took that kick and subsequently went down to one knee – it’s unclear what happened with Harrison Petty.
“Blake Howes displayed impressive awareness as he immediately sensed something was amiss.”

“This is very worrying; he’s being taken off the field,” Hill added. “His teammates gathered around him quite quickly.”
Despite the disruption, the Demons managed to clinch the crucial win by the slimmest of margins, now sitting just above Brisbane in eighth place on the AFL ladder.
They’ll aim to maintain their momentum when they take on Richmond at the MCG this Friday afternoon.
