Rennes dominated UEFA Europa Conference League semi-finalists RC Strasbourg Alsace with a 3-0 victory, marking their third straight win in Ligue 1 and propelling them into the top four.
Strasbourg, who had been unbeaten in their last four home league matches, started brightly and really should have taken the lead in the 15th minute when the first clear chance of the match came their way.
Chelsea loanee David Datro Fofana raced through on goal and rounded the goalkeeper, but in a moment of indecision, he struck the ball weakly at the recovering Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, who managed to clear off the line just in time.
This moment proved crucial, as Rennes quickly established dominance, generating several scoring opportunities.
Musa Al-Taamari was particularly a threat for Rennes with his electrifying pace, yet Mike Penders recovered brilliantly to deny his strike after a spectacular burst of speed created a clear chance. Despite some good saves in the first half, Penders’ poor kick-out led to the opening goal, finding Sebastian Szymanski.
The Polish midfielder reacted swiftly, redirecting the ball to Esteban Lepaul, who dispatched a low shot into the net for his 17th goal of the Ligue 1 season.
Penders managed to redeem himself with a remarkable double save, fending off attempts from both Al-Taamari and Ludovic Blas, but the hosts rightfully went into halftime trailing.

Instead of responding quickly after the break, Gary O’Neil’s side crumbled, conceding two goals in quick succession. The first came from Lepaul, whose flicked header appeared to be on target, but Breel Embolo ensured the ball crossed the line, chesting it home.
Less than two minutes later, it was 3-0, with Al-Taamari finally finding the net with a precise finish after receiving an astute pass from Blas.
In search of a response, Strasbourg made three changes just before the hour mark and nearly clawed their way back when Martial Godo’s mishit volley struck the post.
However, they could not recover, and Rennes’ three points bring them to just one point behind third-placed Lille, intensifying their pursuit of UEFA Champions League football for next season.
This defeat leaves Strasbourg likely facing a mid-table finish, as they remain eight points adrift of the top six, possibly allowing them to concentrate on their upcoming UECL campaign.
