Tottenham’s head coach Roberto De Zerbi remains optimistic that his team is “not done yet,” following a frustrating 2-2 draw against Brighton on Saturday, which leaves them trapped in the Premier League relegation zone.
Spurs took the lead on two occasions in front of their fervent home crowd, with Xavi Simons’ stunning goal in the 77th minute seemingly setting them up for a crucial three points as time ran out.
However, celebrations quickly turned to shock as Georginio Rutter found the net to seal a share of the spoils at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The result means Tottenham sits 18th in the Premier League, trailing West Ham by a point and Nottingham Forest by two, with just five matches remaining.
The spectre of experiencing their first relegation since 1977 hangs over last season’s Europa League finalists, who Deloitte ranks as the ninth richest club globally.
De Zerbi, who managed his first home match on Saturday, expressed that the draw felt more like a defeat but insisted that his squad possesses the talent to secure victories in all five upcoming fixtures.
“It’s not finished yet; we’ve got another five games, and it’s going to be tough,” he stated.
“We all understand this is a challenging moment, but we still have five games ahead of us, giving us a potential 15 points.”
“This team is capable of winning five consecutive matches.”
The Italian manager encouraged his players, who appeared distraught at full-time, to trust in his leadership.
“They need to follow me; they shouldn’t overthink things, but rather listen to me,” he asserted.
“I’m proud of their performance; they must stay strong and focused solely on the upcoming Wolverhampton match next week.”
“They should arrive for training on Monday afternoon with a smile, as otherwise, they’ll be sent home immediately.”
“I don’t have time for negative attitudes or to deal with sad players or assistants. We are fortunate to be working in a top club, a great stadium, and in the Premier League.”
Following their clash with Wolves, Spurs have fixtures against Aston Villa, Leeds, Chelsea, and Everton coming up.
While the squad is filled with talent, despite De Zerbi’s encouraging comments, their chances of avoiding relegation look increasingly perilous.
Spurs in a Winless Drought
Tottenham has not tasted victory in the league since December, highlighting their current struggles.
Compounding their woes, Nottingham Forest, who meet relegation-threatened Burnley on Sunday, and West Ham, who visit Crystal Palace the following day, are consistently securing vital points.
Leeds defeated Wolves 3-0 on Saturday, now sitting a comfortable eight points above the relegation zone.
De Zerbi, who was appointed earlier this month as Tottenham’s third coach of the season, faces an uphill battle, although there were some positive takeaways from the match against Brighton.

However, he implored his players to maintain confidence and embrace a more adventurous approach.
“We need bravery now; we have to win and to do that, we must play positively and with the ball rather than merely sitting back and defending,” he emphasised.
Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hurzeler, who is in pursuit of a European spot for the next season, expressed that Tottenham possesses the quality necessary for survival.
“They have exceptional players in their squad,”
he remarked. “Their attacking options can make a difference with a single moment, as they demonstrated today.”
“I believe they have sufficient quality in their squad to achieve survival.”
