Elfsborg and Malmo find themselves at the summit of the Allsvenskan standings, each boasting seven points after three matches. Both clubs achieved 1-0 victories on the road, with Elfsborg triumphing over Degerfors and Malmo edging past Djurgarden on Friday night.
Djurgarden – Malmo
The clash at 3Arena in Stockholm saw two powerhouses of Swedish football go head-to-head. The home team aimed to extend their flawless start to the season, while Malmo sought to demonstrate that their opening draw against Orgryte was merely a brief hiccup.
Despite enjoying a majority of possession in the first half, Djurgarden struggled to convert this into scoring opportunities. They recorded 10 shots compared to Malmo’s three, yet only Patric Aslund’s attempt tested Malmo’s goalkeeper Robin Olsen, who expertly denied the effort.
Then, in the 60th minute, Malmo seized the chance to turn the tide with their first serious attempt on goal. Otto Rosengren delivered a well-placed corner to the back post, where Sead Haksabanovic, a former Djurgarden player, executed a sweetly struck volley that found its way into the bottom corner.
As in the first half, the home side managed to dominate possession but could muster just a single effort on goal, with Bo Hegland coming closest to breaching Olsen’s clean sheet. Nonetheless, MFF held firm to secure the victory, although it was tinged with disappointment as Pontus Jansson picked up an injury during stoppage time.
Degerfors 0-1 Elfsborg
After responding to a heavy defeat against Sirius in their opening match by comprehensively beating Halmstad, Degerfors found themselves on the wrong end yet again as Elfsborg secured all three points with a 1-0 victory at Stora Valla, joining Malmo at the top of the table on seven points.
Similar to the earlier match in Stockholm, the first half was sparse in terms of chances, and, as was the case in the capital, the only goal was scored in the second half from a set piece. After being awarded a free-kick just outside the Degerfors area, Julius Magnusson expertly curled the ball around the wall, evading goalkeeper Matvei Igonen.
Ludvig Fritzson came the closest to scoring for the home side when Marcus Rafferty was brought down at the edge of the 18-yard box, which led to a caution for simulation, but overall, Degerfors failed to create enough opportunities to mount a comeback. Elfsborg currently sit atop the table, ahead of Malmo solely on alphabetical order.
