Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has dubbed the upcoming Premier League encounter with leaders Arsenal this Sunday a final, stating that a loss would significantly jeopardise his team’s chances for the title ahead of the highly anticipated match at the Etihad Stadium.
Currently, City is six points behind Arsenal but has a game in hand, meaning a victory could narrow the distance and ramp up the pressure as the championship race enters its crucial phase.
However, Guardiola made it clear that the margin for error is minimal, recognising that failing to secure three points would leave his side facing an uphill battle.
“Absolutely,” the Spaniard replied when asked if he considers the match a final. “If we lose, it’s done.”
“We are ready”
Despite the tight nature of the competition, Guardiola expressed confidence in his squad, emphasising that belief is vital at this juncture of the season.
“If confidence were something you could purchase, we would buy it immediately. It’s one of the key elements,” he said at a press conference. “(Our confidence) is solid. We are ready.”
“A month ago, I thought we might not be in this position due to dropped points at crucial times. However, we reviewed the calendar and realised, ‘Alright, we have Arsenal at home. It’s six points. It’s a significant gap, but we have an opportunity.’
“That’s the situation we find ourselves in. It all hinges on our performance, and everything will be revealed on Sunday. Our fans have sold out the stadium. Everything is set for a fantastic match.”
Guardiola mentioned that Nico O’Reilly, who netted twice in City’s 2-0 victory in the League Cup final against Arsenal, is fit to play after experiencing discomfort in his left hamstring during last weekend’s match against Chelsea.
This exhilarating win was part of a strong streak for City, which also included a resounding 4-0 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals. They have been unbeaten in the league since mid-January.
City’s recent performances have begun to instil a sense of unease among Arsenal supporters.
“If we can replicate our second-half performance from the League Cup final for the entire 95 minutes and they play as they did in their second half, we should win. Although, football is unpredictable,” Guardiola stated.
“I know Mikel (Arteta, Arsenal’s manager). He will make adjustments, and we need to be prepared for that. Ultimately, it comes down to how each player performs individually in those matchups.”
Not underdogs
Guardiola asserted that City must elevate their game further if they are to sustain a title challenge in the final weeks of the campaign.
“We need to improve,” he stated. “The first half against Chelsea (a 3-0 win) was adequate but not exceptional. Our initial 30 minutes against Liverpool were also below par. In the final against Arsenal, they outplayed us in the first 30 minutes.”
“You can’t expect teams of this calibre to be flawless for 90 or 95 minutes, yet this area is less about the future, present, or past, and more about confidence, which is a vital component.”
When asked if City are the underdogs, Guardiola dismissed the notion. “I comprehend your perspective, but perhaps we are not,” he commented. “Arsenal have been the best so far, but we want to take them on.”
“I reminded the players today that it’s simply a football match, and we need to approach it as such. If you let emotions get in the way, that’s how you lose focus.”
Guardiola expressed pride in City’s ongoing campaigns across several competitions, even if the outcome on Sunday could prove critical.
“We’ll see what unfolds,” he said. “But it’s never over until it’s truly over, and we’re still in the mix. I’m proud to be in this position, competing against them.”
