Bayern Munich demonstrated remarkable mental fortitude and unwavering belief, overcoming the odds to defeat Real Madrid 4-3 after trailing three times, securing their spot in the Champions League semi-finals, according to coach Vincent Kompany.
Kompany, who received a booking during the match and will miss the first leg of the semi-final against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, noted that the Bavarians, who are in pursuit of a treble, required immense resilience to edge past the record 15-time European champions, winning the tie 6-4 on aggregate.
“The lads showed incredible mental strength today to bounce back from setbacks,” Kompany stated. “The support from our fans was invaluable. We maintained our composure and always believed that our moment would arrive. The boys thoroughly earned this victory.”
“What stands out for me is the unity we displayed. That’s the takeaway from this match. We exhibited an unwavering belief and dedication to fight our way back into contention.”
“Our squad possesses substantial talent and experience to navigate such situations. To concede a goal just 35 seconds into the match meant we had to reset quickly. However, we remained focused on our strategy,” Kompany explained.
The home side found themselves trailing 1-0 just after kickoff when Arda Guler capitalised on a costly error by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, with Real Madrid regaining the lead twice more to take a 3-2 advantage into half-time.
However, Bayern, who had claimed a 2-1 victory in the first leg in Spain, kept their cool, scoring twice in the dying stages through Luis Diaz and Michael Olise to clinch victory and progress to the semi-finals.
The six-time European champions could potentially secure the Bundesliga title this weekend, boasting a 12-point lead with five matches remaining, before their German Cup semi-final clash against Bayer Leverkusen.
“It was a very emotional encounter,” said Kompany, now in his second season with Bayern. “We enjoyed a lot of possession and always felt we could find the net. However, we must remember that Real Madrid is still Real Madrid. They possess exceptionally quick players and are continuously a threat.”
Kompany has become the 11th coach to guide Bayern to the European Cup semi-finals.
