Real Madrid’s manager, Alvaro Arbeloa, expressed that the sending off of Eduardo Camavinga “spoiled” Wednesday night’s Champions League quarter-final after his team was knocked out by Bayern Munich.
Camavinga, who came on as a substitute, picked up two yellow cards in rapid succession, resulting in his dismissal just four minutes before the end of the second leg of the quarter-final.
At the time of Camavinga’s red card, the aggregate score was level; however, Bayern clinched the match with two late goals, securing a 4-3 victory on the night and a 6-4 win on aggregate, which sets them up for a semi-final clash against holders Paris Saint-Germain.
The second yellow card shown to the French midfielder seemed to arise from his delay in restarting play after fouling Harry Kane.
“It’s astonishing that a player can be sent off for such an instance in a match of this significance,” Arbeloa told TNT Sports.
“We’re feeling incredibly upset, angry, and disappointed. This match felt like a pivotal point in our season.“
In a conversation with Movistar, Arbeloa stated the referee “ruined” the fixture by dismissing Camavinga, asserting that the official was unaware of the prior yellow card.
“I don’t think the referee even recognised he had been booked, which is why he took that action. He’s ruined a knockout tie, a match that was thrilling and at a brilliant level, and that’s where it all fell apart.“
As he left the pitch, Real midfielder Jude Bellingham described the decision as “a joke,” while Antonio Rudiger remarked, “You saw the situations yourself—it’s probably best not to comment.“
On the other hand, Luis Diaz, who netted shortly after to put Bayern in front on aggregate, supported the referee’s choice, stating that Camavinga obstructed their ability to launch a counter-attack by refusing to release the ball promptly.
“I think the referee’s decision to send him off was correct. We were eager to take the free-kick quickly, and he held onto the ball,” Diaz explained to reporters.
This defeat leaves Real Madrid facing the prospect of ending another season without a major trophy, as Arbeloa’s squad currently trails Barcelona by nine points in La Liga with seven matches left to play.
