Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa stated that the decision to issue a red card to Eduardo Camavinga “ruined” Wednesday night’s Champions League quarter-final, leading to his team’s exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Substitute Camavinga received two yellow cards in rapid succession, resulting in his dismissal just four minutes before the end of the quarter-final second leg.
The match was evenly poised when Camavinga was sent off, yet Bayern capitalised late on, scoring twice to secure a 4-3 victory on the night and a 6-4 win on aggregate, advancing to face title holders Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
The second yellow card for the French midfielder appeared to be issued for delaying the restart after he fouled Harry Kane.
“It’s unbelievable to send off a player for that kind of action in a match of this significance,” Arbeloa remarked to TNT Sports.
“We’re extremely upset, frustrated, and disappointed. This felt like a pivotal game in our season.“
In a conversation with Movistar, Arbeloa accused the referee of having “ruined” the match by sending off Camavinga, suggesting that the official was unaware of the player’s existing yellow card.
“I genuinely believe the referee didn’t even realise he had already booked him, which is why he made that decision. He’s disrupted a knockout tie in what was a beautifully competitive game, one that was elevated by fantastic play, and that’s when it all fell apart.“
As he walked past reporters following the match, Real midfielder Jude Bellingham referred to the decision as “a joke,” while Antonio Rudiger commented, “You saw the incidents yourself – it’s probably best not to say much more.“
Luis Diaz, who scored shortly after to give Bayern the lead on aggregate, supported the referee’s decision, stating that Camavinga had impeded the hosts from taking a quick free-kick by holding onto the ball.
“I think the referee was justified in sending him off. We wanted to take the free-kick quickly, but he held on to the ball,” Diaz told journalists.
The loss leaves Real Madrid poised to complete a second consecutive season without a significant trophy, with Arbeloa’s side sitting nine points behind leaders Barcelona with seven fixtures remaining in La Liga.
