Arsenal trudged into the UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-finals following a lacklustre 0-0 stalemate against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium, securing their place in the last four for a second consecutive year with a 1-0 aggregate victory.
The home side desperately needed a strong showing after suffering defeat in their last three domestic fixtures, particularly with a crucial away fixture against Premier League title challengers Manchester City on the horizon this Sunday.
They commenced positively, yet the intensity waned as Sporting found their rhythm, with Francisco Trincao squandering the first notable chance by shooting wide from just inside the area in the 18th minute.
Shortly after, Pedro Goncalves missed the target from a tight angle, prompting anxiety among the Emirates crowd as Sporting appeared increasingly confident as the first half edged closer to its conclusion.
Two minutes before the interval, Geny Catamo sent a warning signal when he connected on the volley with Maximiliano Araujo’s cross, narrowly missing the far post with David Raya unable to intervene.
Eberechi Eze then sent a long-range effort over the bar in the last action of a first half where Arsenal failed to seriously trouble Rui Silva in goal.
Sporting had netted 14 of their 20 UCL goals this season after half-time, and they nearly added to that tally when Araújo fired wide just three minutes after the resumption.
In response, Gunners manager Mikel Arteta opted to substitute former Sporting player Viktor Gyokeres for first-leg scorer Kai Havertz, and his team nearly capitalised immediately; however, Noni Madueke, under pressure, shot into the side netting after charging into the box.
The tension mounted as Arsenal struggled to find the vital goal to secure their progression, leading to Arteta receiving a booking for disputing a decision midway through the half.

The Gunners had limited room for error, but they rallied in the closing stages as Sporting began to fade. Leandro Trossard came close, heading against the woodwork from a corner taken by Max Dowman.
Arsenal’s eighth clean sheet in the UCL this season provides a solid foundation ahead of their semi-final clash against Atlético Madrid. They have now lost just once in their last 24 European matches at the Emirates, recording 17 wins and 6 draws.
On the other hand, Sporting’s quest for their first semi-final appearance in this competition continues, extending their winless streak in continental away fixtures against English clubs to 11 matches (D6, L5).
