Arsenal scraped into the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) with a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium, securing progression with a 1-0 aggregate victory. This marks a second consecutive year that the Gunners have reached the final four of the competition.
The hosts were in desperate need of a strong performance following three consecutive defeats in domestic competitions, particularly with a crucial trip to Premier League title contenders Manchester City on the horizon this Sunday.
They started positively but soon saw their intensity dwindle as Sporting found their rhythm, with Francisco Trincao registering the first clear chance of the match, blasting wide from the edge of the box after 18 minutes.
Pedro Goncalves shot over the bar from a tight angle on the half-hour mark, as the visitors continued to exhibit composure. Frustration amongst the home crowd grew as half-time drew nearer.
Just two minutes before the break, Geny Catamo sent a warning sign when he connected with Maximiliano Araujo’s cross on the volley, only to watch his effort kiss the outside of the far post while David Raya was left stranded.
Eberechi Eze then rose to the occasion with an attempt from 20 yards that sailed over the crossbar, marking a first half in which Arsenal failed to force Rui Silva into a significant save.
Sporting had netted 14 out of their 20 UCL goals this season in the second half and nearly added to their tally shortly after the interval when Araújo sent a shot just wide three minutes in.
In response, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta substituted former Sporting player Viktor Gyokeres for Kai Havertz, the scorer from the first leg. Almost immediately, the Gunners had a chance to go ahead as Noni Madueke surged into the box but unfortunately fired into the side netting while off balance.
The tension mounted as Arsenal desperately sought the goal that would end the tie, with Arteta receiving a booking for his protests midway through the half.

Despite their need for a quick resolution, Arsenal finished the match on a high note as Sporting’s performance waned, with Leandro Trossard hitting the post from a corner taken by Max Dowman.
The Gunners’ record-extending eighth clean sheet in the Champions League provides them with a robust foundation heading into their semi-final clash with Atlético Madrid. They have now lost just one of their last 24 European encounters at the Emirates, boasting an impressive record of 17 wins and 6 draws.
Meanwhile, Sporting’s quest for their first semi-final appearance in this competition remains elusive, with their winless streak in continental away matches against English teams now stretching to 11 games (6 draws, 5 losses).
