On Wednesday, Everton commemorated the 37th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster by revealing a permanent tribute at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium, honouring the 97 football fans who tragically lost their lives in the catastrophic event of 1989.
The victims, many of whom were young, were tragically crushed in an overcrowded, fenced section of the stadium in Sheffield, northern England, during an FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. This incident is regarded as one of the most devastating stadium disasters in history.
The memorial features two young mascots clasping hands—a girl in an Everton shirt adorned with the number nine alongside a boy in Liverpool red bearing the number seven—symbolising the unity that surpasses the long-standing rivalry between the clubs.
“Everton welcomed representatives from the Hillsborough families, alongside friends from Liverpool Football Club, to Hill Dickinson Stadium today to pay tribute to the 97,” stated Everton.
Football legends Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush paid their respects on behalf of Liverpool, laying flowers at the memorial unveiling.
This Sunday, Everton will host Liverpool in the Premier League.
