On Wednesday, Everton commemorated the 37th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster by unveiling a permanent tribute at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium to honour the 97 football fans who lost their lives in the tragic event of 1989.
Many of the victims, predominantly young, were crushed in an overcrowded, fenced-off area of the stadium in Sheffield, northern England, during an FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. It is remembered as one of the most devastating stadium disasters in history.
The memorial features two young mascots holding hands – a girl wearing an Everton jersey with the number nine and a boy clad in Liverpool red displaying the number seven – symbolising a spirit of solidarity that surpasses the longstanding rivalry between the clubs.
“Everton welcomed members of the Hillsborough families and representatives from Liverpool Football Club to Hill Dickinson Stadium today to pay tribute to the 97,” Everton stated.
Liverpool legends Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush placed floral tributes on behalf of the club during the unveiling ceremony.
This Sunday, Everton will face Liverpool in the Premier League.
