Beldine Odemba, the head coach of the Kenya women’s national team, has expressed the squad’s determination to take down Australia in their upcoming FIFA Women’s Series match at Nyayo Stadium this Wednesday.
The Harambee Starlets advanced to challenge the Matildas – formerly known as the “Female Socceroos” – after sealing a 2-0 victory over India. In their part, Australia showcased their prowess by thrashing Malawi 5-0.
The convincing win in Nairobi was marked by goals from Emily Van Egmond, Sam Kerr, Alex Chidiac, Holly McNamara, and Leticia McKenna. While Kenya holds a strong reputation in Africa, Australia boasts titles as a three-time OFC champion, a one-time AFC champion, and a one-time AFF champion.
The Australian team has represented their nation in the FIFA Women’s World Cup on eight occasions, including co-hosting responsibilities in 2023, and has competed in the Olympic Games five times, although they have yet to clinch a title in either event.
Despite their formidable pedigree, Coach Odemba remains unfazed as they prepare to meet Australia, firmly believing in her team’s potential to create an upset.
‘A significant moment for the Starlets’
“This encounter will be our first against Australia, and we have adequately prepared for it. We are looking forward to challenging a strong opponent,” she stated.
“I have previously mentioned that to become a top team, you need to engage with the best, and we are thrilled that this opportunity has arisen.
“This will be a learning experience for us, a fantastic moment for our players, and a significant opportunity for me as the coach to face a world-class team that has competed at the World Cup eight times.”
Odemba further noted, “We are making progress towards that level, so this represents a good challenge for us.”
Addressing injury concerns within the squad, she revealed: “We have one or perhaps two players who won’t participate. Ruth (Ingosi) sustained an injury that required stitches, ruling her out for two weeks.”
“We are also monitoring Valerie (Nekesa), who took a knock to her thigh against India. While it’s not severe, we can’t confirm her availability yet.”
Odemba concluded: “The players are aware they’re up against big names, and they understand that Australia is a more advanced team. They have to prepare tactically, and we have ensured we’re ready for that challenge.”
“Facing such teams is beneficial for us, as we aspire to this level of competition. To progress, we must go up against teams ranked higher than us.
“This match will serve as a vital test, and whether we win, draw, or lose—though we’re focusing on victory right now—it provides an invaluable lesson and a significant step forward for women’s football.”
“It’s crucial to experience playing against what the world regards as giants; we need these moments to showcase our capabilities.”
‘Australia is just another team’
Kenya’s captain, Mwanalima Adam, asserted: “Australia is just like any other team; this is a regular game. What matters is our attitude toward it, and we have faith in our abilities.”
“It’s an exciting opportunity to play against a team with such experienced players.”
Defender Elizabeth Ochaka, when asked about facing Chelsea’s Sam Kerr, commented: “I don’t fear her at all; she has two legs just like me.”
“This is a wonderful chance to compete against top stars as we prepare for WAFCON, where we will face an array of talented players.”
In the lead-up to Kenya’s game against Australia, Malawi will take on India in a third-place playoff. The Scorchers are keen to end the tournament on a high note after suffering a heavy loss to Australia.
“We are preparing thoroughly for the match against India. We’ve addressed the mistakes made in our opening game against Australia, and the players are well aware of how crucial this match is. We expect to achieve a positive result, and everyone is ready,” said Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili.
He added: “India plays as a cohesive unit, employing a 4-4-2 formation and pressing collectively. We have taken this information into account in our preparations, and our strategy will be positive.”
The FIFA Series serves as part of Kenya’s preparations for the forthcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which will provide a pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
