The Wellington Phoenix announced on Wednesday that Mackenzie Barry, the most capped player in the women’s team, will be returning for her sixth season.
Since the inaugural season, Mackenzie Barry has been a steadfast presence in the Phoenix defence and has officially re-signed with the club for the upcoming 2026-27 Ninja A-League season.

Barry has started an impressive 91 of the club’s 97 matches, including all 20 games in their record-breaking regular season of 2025-26. In the absence of club captain CJ Bott, who is expecting her first child in July, Barry has also taken on a leadership role for the Nix.
Phoenix head coach Bev Priestman praised Barry as a vital component of the team and an embodiment of the club’s values.
“What you’ve witnessed on the pitch this season, in terms of team effort, is largely driven by Mack at the back,” Priestman stated. “She’s the consummate professional, as well as a world-class defender and individual.”

“When I introduced new players to this team this season, it was crucial they understood what it means to represent this city and country in the A-League, and there’s no one better than Mack to demonstrate that,” said Priestman.
“Her dedication during training is exceptional. Whether it’s a passing drill or a competitive match scenario, she sets the bar high for everyone.”
“She’s undoubtedly one of the toughest athletes I’ve encountered, having played through mild hypothermia and ankle injuries this season alone. Her commitment to this club is remarkable.”
Mackenzie Barry expressed that extending her stay in the capital was a straightforward choice.
“This has undoubtedly been the most enjoyable and successful season of my career,” Barry remarked.
“So, why would I want to leave? The Phoenix feels like home to me. This is my first professional club, and I was chosen, trusted, and believed in when I was just 19 to play consistently.”

Barry believes Wellington is the ideal place for her aspirations to be selected for the Football Ferns squad for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
“That’s a significant goal for me. Missing out on the last World Cup at home was tough, but participating in the recent Olympics in France provided me with valuable tournament experience, which was fantastic. I’m eager to be selected again.”
Mackenzie Barry becomes the fourth female player to re-sign with the Wellington Phoenix in recent weeks, bringing the total number of squad members confirmed for the next season to 11.
