Atletico Madrid advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League (UCL), even after a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
Just 33 seconds into the match, Atleti’s goalkeeper Juan Musso was called into action, expertly diving to his right to deny Lamine Yamal’s curling shot.
In the fourth minute, a mishap in the Atleti defence allowed Ferran Torres to find a free Lamine Yamal, who coolly slotted the ball into the net, giving Barcelona an early lead.
The atmosphere was tense as Barcelona took control of possession. Following another error, this time from Kok3, Torres fired a stunning left-footed shot into the top corner, bringing the aggregate score level.
Just a minute later, Fermin Lopez should have added another, but his header went straight at Musso. A stray boot from the keeper accidentally made contact with Fermin’s face, causing a lengthy delay.
Shortly after the restart, Atleti’s Ademola Lookman found the net with a straightforward tap-in, marking a historic low for Barcelona as they became the first team in UCL history to go 15 consecutive games without keeping a clean sheet.
The start of the second half saw Atleti adopting a more defensive stance with a five-man backline, looking to exploit counterattacks with balls played over the top.
As the pressure mounted from Barcelona, Ferran instinctively volleyed the ball into the net only for VAR to rule it offside, triggering wild reactions from the crowd.
Barcelona continued to push forward, with Lamine central to their attacking play, but as the match progressed, it began to look increasingly likely that Atleti would seal their advancement.
A crucial save by Joan Garcia from Robin Le Normand preserved Barcelona’s hopes, until Eric Garcia received a red card for a professional foul with just over 10 minutes remaining.
In the dying moments of the match, Barcelona launched a desperate offensive, yet they fell short of forcing extra time.
This result allows Atletico Madrid to maintain their remarkable record of never failing to advance past the UCL knockout stages when winning the first leg away, achieving this in all 22 attempts.
On the other hand, Barcelona has now suffered seven defeats in their last ten UCL quarter-final ties, leaving them focused solely on claiming the La Liga title.
