Atletico Madrid advanced to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-finals, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in the second leg of their quarter-final clash.
In an intense start, Atleti’s goalkeeper Juan Musso found himself making a save within the first 33 seconds, diving to his right to deny Lamine Yamal’s curling shot.
In the fourth minute, a mix-up in defence by the home side allowed Ferran Torres to set up an unmarked Lamine, who calmly finished to give Barcelona the lead.
The atmosphere was electric as Barcelona took control of the match, and after another error—this time from Kok3—Torres executed an exquisite left-footed volley into the top corner, drawing the aggregate score level.
Just a minute later, Fermin Lopez had a chance to push Barca ahead but directed his header straight at Musso, who then accidentally caught Fermin’s face with a stray boot, resulting in a lengthy stoppage.
Following the restart, Atletico’s Ademola Lookman found the net with a straightforward tap-in, marking a significant statistic as Barcelona became the first team in UCL history to concede in 15 consecutive matches.
The second half saw Atleti employing a deeper defensive setup with five at the back, aiming to hit Barcelona on the break with long balls.
Barcelona continued to apply pressure, and Ferran Torres volleyed home, only to have the goal disallowed by VAR for offside, igniting wild reactions from the crowd.
Despite Barca’s dominance, Lamine Yamal was at the centre of their attacking efforts, but as the match wore on, Atletico appeared more likely to secure progression.
A crucial save by Joan Garcia from a close-range shot by Robin Le Normand maintained Barcelona’s hopes, but a professional foul saw Eric Garcia dismissed with just over 10 minutes remaining.
In the dying minutes, Barca unleashed a fervent attack, but they could not find the equaliser needed to force extra time.
This win means Atletico Madrid has maintained their impressive record of never failing to advance past the UCL knockout stages after securing a first-leg victory away from home (22 attempts).
On the flip side, Barcelona have now endured defeats in seven of their last ten UCL quarter-final fixtures and will need to shift their focus to successfully clinching the LaLiga title.
