Paris Saint-Germain has become the first French club to reach a third successive UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-final after securing a 2-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, mirroring their first-leg result and eliminating Arne Slot’s side for the second consecutive year.
With hopes of overturning a first-leg deficit of two or more goals in the UCL for the first time since their stunning 4-0 triumph against Barcelona in the 2018/19 season, Liverpool were bolstered by the encouragement of their home supporters.
The match started brightly for the hosts, yet it was PSG that had the first significant chance, as Giorgi Mamardashvili had to retreat swiftly to prevent Ousmane Dembele from catching him off his line.
Dembele then had another opportunity, but his close-range attempt drifted over the bar. Liverpool’s hopes of making a comeback were further complicated when former PSG player Hugo Ekitike had to exit the match due to injury.
This injury, however, paved the way for Mohamed Salah’s introduction, who almost had an immediate impact.
A cross from Salah was headed down by Ibrahima Konate towards Milos Kerkez, but he was thwarted by a fantastic save from Matvey Safonov. Marquinhos then intervened to prevent Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool’s captain, from scoring from the follow-up.
As the first half drew to a close, Liverpool struggled to create more significant opportunities, and PSG appeared content to maintain their lead from the first leg.

Slot made further adjustments at half-time, leading to a noticeable improvement in his team’s performance.
Cody Gakpo prompted another save from Safonov soon after, while Joe Gomez came close with a header in search of his first career goal.
Liverpool kept pushing for the equaliser and were unfortunate to have a penalty claim rejected by VAR after Willian Pacho brought down Alexis Mac Allister.
With the introduction of Rio Ngumoha signalling an effort for a late onslaught, PSG dealt a decisive blow with less than 20 minutes left to play.
Dembele picked up the ball from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia outside the penalty area, shifted onto his left foot, and brilliantly curled his shot past Mamardashvili.

Regrettably for Liverpool, they could only muster a couple of tame shots, and PSG sealed the win during stoppage time when Bradley Barcola set up a wide-open Dembele to score his second goal.
Les Rouge-et-Bleu have now eliminated a total of five English teams from the UCL knockout stages over the last two seasons, and they will undoubtedly be among the frontrunners to defend their title.
With the team assured of finishing the season without silverware, Slot now must ensure Liverpool secures a top-five finish in the Premier League, or risk facing the prospect of losing his job by the end of the season.
