Finland has secured their second victory in three matches in Group B3 of the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, triumphing over Slovakia 4-2 in an exciting encounter at Bolt Arena in Helsinki.
In their opening match in March, Finland gave Portugal a tough challenge before conceding two late goals. They bounced back with a deserving win against Latvia at home, which positions them second in the group, ahead of Slovakia on goal difference.
This afternoon’s three points were vital for Finland’s aspirations to top the group, and they got off to an ideal start when Katariina Kosola controlled a well-placed pass from Joanna Tynnila, remaining calm as she broke through on goal to put her team in front in the fourth minute.
A significant milestone occurred midway through the first half, as a slick move saw Lotta Lindstrom skillfully hold up the ball on the edge of the box before setting up Adelina Engman, who finished flawlessly to mark her 100th cap.
However, with 10 minutes left in the first half, the match excitement was reignited when Martina Surnovska played a clever through ball to Klaudia Fabova, who managed to outpace the advancing Anna Koivunen to get Slovakia on the scoreboard.
The second half was pivotal, with the contest swinging dramatically within eight minutes.
Helmarit struck again as the game approached its midway point, regaining possession when Slovakia attacked and countering swiftly. Engman received a pinpoint pass while charging down the left flank, and her cross was powerfully headed home by Paulina Nystrom, marking her first international goal.
Nevertheless, Finland faced a setback just seconds after the restart when Dominika Skorvankova was fouled in the box by Oona Siren, allowing Patricia Hmirova to convert from the penalty spot.
Finland eventually sealed the victory 15 minutes before full-time, courtesy of the “other” Nystrom. Captain Eva Nystrom rose highest from a corner, and although her initial header was blocked, she capitalised on the rebound, guiding the ball into the bottom corner.
This 4-2 win boosts Finland’s tally to six points, although they remain behind Portugal on goal difference. The Portuguese have the opportunity to reclaim a three-point lead against Latvia later today, while the Finnish women’s team will next face Latvia on Saturday, the 18th.
