Javier Mascherano has officially stepped down from his role as head coach of Inter Miami, citing personal reasons, just one season after steering the team to landmark successes in the club’s history.
The Argentine manager shared his decision through an official statement, expressing gratitude to the club, players, and supporters for his time in charge.
“I wish to announce that, due to personal matters, I have chosen to conclude my role as head coach of Inter Miami. Firstly, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the club for their trust, to the staff for their combined efforts, and especially to the players, who helped create unforgettable memories,” he remarked.
“I’m also grateful to the fans and the wider club community because none of this would have been achievable without their support. I will forever treasure the memory of our first trophy, and regardless of where I am, I will continue to wish them all the best.”
The club’s management responded promptly, with Jorge Mas emphasising the significant contribution Mascherano made during his time.
“Javier will always hold an esteemed place in the club’s history. His legacy extends beyond the trophies, like the MLS Cup and our remarkable journey in the FIFA Club World Cup, to the exemplary work ethic he demonstrated daily. We respect his decision and are thankful for all he has done.”
Guillermo Hoyos to succeed Mascherano as head coach
During the 2025 season, which marked his debut in charge, Mascherano delivered outstanding results, clinching two major trophies, including the club’s inaugural MLS Cup title, and setting a record of 101 goals scored in a single season.
Inter Miami also gained international acclaim, becoming the first MLS team to advance to the knockout stage of the FIFA Club World Cup and the first CONCACAF club to defeat a European side in an official fixture.
Looking ahead, the club announced that Guillermo Hoyos will be taking over as head coach, while Alberto Marrero will assume the role of sporting director.
