Javier Mascherano has made the decision to step down as head coach of Inter Miami, citing personal reasons, just one season after achieving unprecedented success for the club.
The Argentine manager communicated his choice through an official statement, expressing gratitude to the club, players, and supporters for his time with the team.
“I wish to announce that, due to personal reasons, I have decided to conclude my role as head coach of Inter Miami. Firstly, I want to extend my gratitude to the club for the trust placed in me, to all the staff for their collective hard work, and especially to the players, who created unforgettable moments,” he remarked.
“I also want to express my appreciation to the fans and the broader club community, as none of this would have been achievable without them. I will forever cherish the memory of our first trophy, and no matter where I go next, I will continuously wish them all the best.”
The club’s management responded promptly, with Jorge Mas acknowledging the significant impact Mascherano had during his tenure.
“Javier will forever hold a place in the club’s history. His contributions go beyond the trophies we won, such as the MLS Cup and our journey in the FIFA Club World Cup; it’s also about the example he set daily through unwavering dedication and hard work. We respect his choice and sincerely thank him for everything he has done.”
Guillermo Hoyos to succeed Mascherano as head coach
During his first season at the helm, Mascherano achieved extraordinary results, securing two major trophies including the club’s inaugural MLS Cup title, and establishing a record of 101 goals scored in a single campaign.
Inter Miami also made headlines on the global stage, becoming the first MLS team to progress to the knockout stages of the FIFA Club World Cup, as well as being the first team from CONCACAF to defeat a European side in an official match.
Looking ahead, the club has announced that Guillermo Hoyos will take over as head coach, while Alberto Marrero will assume the role of sporting director.
