Manuel Neuer, the seasoned custodian of Bayern Munich, is gearing up for the upcoming Champions League quarter-final second leg against Real Madrid this Wednesday, a match that could mark the end of his illustrious career.
While he’s not the audacious ‘sweeper keeper’ he once was, the two-time Champions League champion was exceptional in Bayern’s 2-1 first-leg victory in Madrid.
A standout performer who earned the man of the match accolade, Neuer made an impressive nine saves, effectively neutralising the threats posed by Real’s Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior for the most part.
Having celebrated his 40th birthday in March, Neuer’s contract with Bayern runs until the end of the current season.
The club appears open to extending the contract for another year, yet Neuer has continually expressed that he is still contemplating his future.
Struggling with muscle injuries over the past two seasons, the 2014 World Cup winner has found his appearances limited.
This season, he’s missed 11 matches due to ongoing calf muscle issues, a stark contrast to his usual standing as an ever-present figure in the line-up.
Although he has already dismissed the prospect of participating in this summer’s World Cup, clinching a third Champions League title alongside a record-equalling 13th Bundesliga championship would provide an ideal farewell.
Bayern have historically dominated German football, but Neuer’s arrival, alongside other modern legends like Thomas Muller, Philipp Lahm, and Bastian Schweinsteiger, catapulted the club to even greater heights.
Before Neuer’s signing in 2011, Bayern had never won more than three consecutive Bundesliga titles; since then, they have only failed to secure the title twice in 15 seasons.
Neuer has been instrumental in two of Bayern’s six Champions League triumphs.
His brilliance remains a vital asset for Bayern, with CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen noting last week: “We had something that Real didn’t – our world-class goalkeeper, our X-factor.”
Centre-back Jonathan Tah commented to reporters, “Are you surprised?” adding: “He simply has a special presence, particularly with the remarkable saves he continues to pull off.
“Such performances shouldn’t be taken for granted, yet for him, it’s just part of his daily routine.”
Neuer’s incredible saves are often featured in highlight reels, but his leadership has been crucial as Bayern works towards recovering from a third-place finish in the Bundesliga last season, aiming to contend for the Champions League once again.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany, in only his second season guiding a team with Champions League aspirations, emphasised this after the first leg.
“Manu only needs to say one sentence, and he brings order to the team. His leadership is as vital to me as his on-field contributions,” Kompany remarked, noting that Neuer “made things significantly easier for me from the outset than I had anticipated.”
‘Incredibly Challenging’
As the teams prepare for Wednesday’s second leg, Neuer is currently the only player in Bayern’s squad who has previously overcome Real Madrid in a two-legged matchup. Since defeating the Spaniards in the 2012 semi-finals, Bayern had failed to secure a win against them in their eight subsequent encounters until last week.
The Gelsenkirchen native has even greater motivation to triumph this time, having endured the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser in the semi-final return leg two years ago, which ultimately led to Bayern’s elimination.
Despite their first-leg advantage, Bayern are acutely aware of their rivals’ strengths. With 29 meetings between these two clubs, no European tie has witnessed as many encounters, and Bayern remains cautious of the Champions League experts.
Real Madrid has recently faced setbacks in LaLiga, now sitting nine points adrift of Barcelona, but Joshua Kimmich acknowledged that the 15-time champions often rise to the occasion when the Champions League anthem plays.
“Form doesn’t matter for Kylian Mbappe and his teammates. When it’s the Champions League, they deliver,” Kimmich stated on Saturday.
“We fully understand who we are up against. It’s a brutally difficult challenge,” Leon Goretzka echoed the same sentiments, stressing their awareness of how quickly Real can create goal-scoring opportunities. “We know what to anticipate.”
