Dominik Szoboszlai has expressed his apologies to Liverpool supporters, clarifying that his body language following the recent FA Cup defeat at the hands of Manchester City was subject to “misinterpretation.”
Following the humiliating 4-0 loss to City in the quarter-finals, Liverpool’s players faced jeers as they approached the fans to show their appreciation.
In response, Szoboszlai was seen shrugging, throwing his arms up, and clapping, gestures that many took as sarcasm underlined by the frustration with the supporters’ criticism.
The Hungarian midfielder was guided away by his team-mate Federico Chiesa, but Szoboszlai sought to downplay the incident ahead of the crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
“It might have been a misunderstanding between myself and the fans,” he remarked to the media on Monday.
“I had no intention of offending anyone. I completely understand the importance of the fans to the club and vice versa.”
“We’re dedicated to the fans, just as they are dedicated to us. If there was a misunderstanding, I sincerely apologise.”
“I do not feel above them; I share the same emotions as they do. I’m with them, we are united, and I hope they feel the same way about us.”
Liverpool find themselves on the brink of being knocked out of the Champions League by PSG for the second consecutive season.
A disappointing showing in Paris last week has left Arne Slot’s side with a formidable challenge ahead if they are to achieve a remarkable turnaround at Anfield.
“We’re going to give it our all and commit fully. I’m prepared to leave everything on the pitch tomorrow (Tuesday),” Szoboszlai declared.
“This match will be a different encounter compared to the first leg. We’ll approach it with a different strategy.”
“I can safely say that all of the players share this sentiment because we desire it immensely. Anything can unfold in a single match at Anfield.”
