Dominik Szoboszlai has extended his apologies to Liverpool supporters, asserting that there was a “miscommunication” regarding his body language following the recent FA Cup setback against Manchester City.
The Liverpool squad faced jeers from fans as they approached to acknowledge their supporters after a disheartening 4-0 defeat in the quarter-finals against City.
In reaction, Szoboszlai shrugged, lifted his arms, and clapped, an action that many interpreted as sarcastic and reflective of his frustration towards the crowd’s negativity.
The Hungary international was escorted away by his teammate Federico Chiesa, but Szoboszlai sought to downplay the episode as he prepared for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain.
“It might have been a misunderstanding between myself and the fans,” he shared with reporters on Monday.
“I had no ill intentions. I fully understand the significance of the fans to this club and what the club represents to them.”
“We put in our utmost effort for the fans, just as they do for us. If there was any misunderstanding, I sincerely apologise.”
“I don’t feel superior to them; my feelings mirror theirs. I stand with them, we stand with them, and I hope they stand with us as well.”
Liverpool finds itself on the brink of being knocked out of the Champions League by PSG for the second year running.
A lacklustre showing in Paris last week has left Arne Slot’s team facing a formidable challenge to pull off a remarkable turnaround against the champions at Anfield.
“We’re going to give it our all and put forth our absolute best. I’m prepared to give everything on the pitch tomorrow (Tuesday),” Szoboszlai declared.
“It will be a completely different match compared to the first leg. We will approach it differently.”
“I can confidently say that all of us players are desperate for this. Anything can happen in a single game at Anfield.”
