Lyon put an end to their dismal run of nine matches without a win by defeating Lorient 2-0 at the Groupama Stadium.
Having started the season with aspirations of securing a place in the UEFA Champions League (UCL), Lyon’s disheartening form had seen them fall to seventh place before kick-off. The challenge posed by Lorient was significant, as the visitors had lost just two of their last 17 league encounters.
The first half was a nervy contest, with neither team managing to apply sustained pressure on their opponent’s goal.
Lyon created the first opportunity, with Roman Yaremchuk directing a header above the crossbar, while Afonso Moreira forced a straightforward save from Yvon Mvogo shortly after.
However, Lorient gradually found their footing in the match. Dominik Greif made a secure save from Jean-Victor Makengo’s effort, and just before half-time, Les Merlus had their best chance of the opening period. Bamba Dieng found himself unmarked after a cross from Noah Cadiou, but Greif made an exceptional save to deny him, then quickly gathered Arthur Avom’s follow-up shot.
During the interval, Lyon’s head coach Paulo Fonseca made three substitutions, introducing Orel Mangala, Endrick, and Corentin Tolisso, a move that proved effective almost instantly. Just three minutes into the second half, Lyon took the lead when Yaremchuk scored his first goal in Ligue 1, heading Endrick’s cross into the bottom corner.
Endrick played a crucial role in the second goal as well, charging into the penalty area and forcing a save from Mvogo before Tolisso was on hand to head the ball into the net.
Lorient attempted to mount a comeback, with Dieng firing off target in a one-on-one situation against Greif. They were also denied a penalty through VAR intervention; while Moreira did foul Dieng in the box, he was initially brought down himself by Panos Katseris.
Avom also went close, with Greif tipping his low shot around for a corner, but ultimately, Lorient could not find a way back into the match.
In the end, Lyon secured all three points, moving within two points of Lille in third place. With just five matches remaining, they are aiming to qualify for the UCL for the first time since the 2019/20 season, when they reached the semi-finals.
Conversely, even had Lorient claimed victory, it would only have given them a faint hope of securing a European spot for next season – this defeat largely extinguishes those aspirations.
