On Thursday, CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, expressed its support for Gianni Infantino should he choose to seek re-election as FIFA president for a fourth term.
Although Infantino has not yet announced his intentions regarding the 2027–2031 term, CONMEBOL’s council released a statement affirming that it has “unanimously expressed its support” for the 56-year-old’s leadership as he prepares for a potential campaign.
“We extend our gratitude to President Gianni Infantino for your unwavering commitment to the advancement of South American football, as well as for your global leadership,” stated CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez.
“We greatly appreciate your engagement with our region and your vision for the continued growth of the sport worldwide.”
CONMEBOL is the first football federation to officially back Infantino’s re-election.
Infantino assumed the presidency in 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter, and has been re-elected unopposed in both 2019 and 2023.
During his time in office, Infantino has advocated for the expansion of FIFA tournaments, with this year’s World Cup in North America marking the debut of 48 teams, while the women’s tournament in 2023 grew to include 32 teams.
However, his leadership has faced scrutiny over matters related to governance and issues surrounding calendar congestion.
