Harry Maguire of Manchester United is eager to secure his spot in Thomas Tuchel’s 26-man England squad for this year’s World Cup in North America. The 33-year-old defender asserts that he still ranks among the world’s finest, regardless of his age.
Maguire made his return to the national side last month during friendly matches against Uruguay and Japan, marking his first involvement with the team since 2024.
He faces stiff competition for a position in the squad from players such as Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, John Stones, and Trevoh Chalobah. Nonetheless, the centre-back is keen to play a part in the tournament, which takes place from June 11 to July 19.
“I believe this could be my final World Cup,” Maguire remarked at United’s training camp in Maynooth, Ireland.

“I’ve participated in two World Cups, but I missed out on the Euros two years ago due to injury, which was a significant disappointment for me.
“Consequently, I’m eager to be part of this tournament, in whatever capacity the manager needs me, be it as a starter or making a difference off the bench.
“I firmly believe, even at my age, that I’m still one of the top defenders in the world, excelling in both defensive and attacking scenarios.”
Maguire has recently signed a contract extension with United, committing to the club until 2027 with the option for an additional year. He noted that the club must enhance their recruitment in the off-season to ensure a strong position for the upcoming season.
England finds themselves in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama, with their opening match against Croatia scheduled for June 17 in Dallas.
