Corinthians have appointed Fernando Diniz, the former interim coach of Brazil, following the dismissal of Dorival Junior amid a disappointing run of eight matches without a win, the club announced late on Monday.
Dorival, who has also coached the Brazil national team, was let go after Corinthians’ 1-0 defeat at home to Internacional in the Serie A on Sunday. This loss left the club languishing in 16th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
Diniz, a former midfielder with Corinthians, had a successful stint as Fluminense’s manager, leading them to victory in the Copa Libertadores in 2023, followed by a win in the Recopa Sudamericana the next year.
During that timeframe, he also had a six-month tenure as Brazil’s interim coach, but was relieved of his duties in January 2024 after suffering Brazil’s first home defeat in a World Cup qualifying match, a 1-0 loss to Argentina.
Corinthians are set to face Argentine side Platense in the Copa Libertadores this Thursday.
