In a tense encounter at Polytec Stadium on Saturday, Central Coast Mariners and Sydney FC battled to a goalless draw in the Ninja A-League, resulting in the defending champions, the Mariners, missing out on a spot in the finals.
Facing the pressure of needing a win to secure their finals fate, the Mariners started strongly, putting Sydney’s defence to the test with several threatening set pieces delivered into the box.
The breakthrough nearly came in the 17th minute when Eliza Familton surged down the right flank. However, the 18-year-old’s attempt struck the base of the post and ricocheted away in favour of Sydney.
As Central Coast pressed forward, they were reminded of Sydney’s attacking prowess when Amber Luchtmeijer nearly found an opening in the box, only to be swiftly closed down at the crucial moment before she could shoot.
Central Coast made quick substitutions after the break, with former Sky Blue, Jynaya Dos Santos, nearly making an immediate impact with a precise cross into the area. Yet, Millie Farrow was unable to capitalise as she was ushered away from a scoring opportunity.
A mix of Sydney’s robust defence and missed chances by the Mariners meant that the visitors had the best opportunities in the closing stages. A swift counter-attack required Lorena Baumann to make a stunning tackle to thwart Riley Tanner’s advance in the box.
Tori Tumeth, one of two Sydney players sporting bloodied noses after a hard-fought second half, broke free and found Luchtmeijer, whose shot was deflected out for a corner. The resulting set-piece remarkably stayed out of the Mariners’ net, as Annalee Grove made two incredible saves: first, she tipped Kirsty Fenton’s header onto the crossbar, and then she denied Fenton’s follow-up effort.
Despite six minutes of added time and a generous allowance from the referee, neither side could find a dramatic late goal. As a result, the Mariners were left hoping for a Canberra United victory over Brisbane Roar to secure their finals aspirations.
Central Coast’s hopes rested on Canberra United defeating Brisbane Roar; however, a 2-1 defeat dashed those dreams, leaving them just shy of Melbourne Victory on goal difference.
This outcome marks the second consecutive year that a reigning champion has missed the finals, following in Sydney FC’s footsteps from last season. For the Sky Blues, who had not missed the finals in their previous 16 seasons before 2024/25, this year saw them finish in a disappointing 10th place—their lowest finish to date. However, they managed to avoid a last-place finish, thanks to that point which elevated them above Western Sydney Wanderers, placing that unwanted title on their rivals instead.
