Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo has expressed his support for the club’s decision to disable social media comments earlier this week following threats of violence aimed at players.
On Tuesday, Canterbury’s Instagram account became inundated with hostile remarks from disgruntled fans, leading to the choice to turn off comments on a post that announced the round five team lineup.
While the club has since reactivated comments for recent updates, club director Phil Gould addressed the social media issue when questioned.
“They are not fans,” Gould remarked on X.
In a press conference on Thursday, Coach Ciraldo reiterated these sentiments, emphasising the importance of safeguarding the players.
“We appreciate our fans and the passion they bring, but when it becomes harmful, we have a responsibility to protect our players,” Ciraldo stated.
“I’m really proud that our club took action and decided to shut it down. Everyone has the right to their opinion, but on our platforms, we need to ensure that boundaries are respected … I’m really proud of our club for making that stand.”

“He [Gould] couldn’t have articulated it any better, so I’ll leave it at that,” Ciraldo added.
“Everyone is passionate about their footy and sport in general – this issue isn’t just a Bulldogs problem; it’s a wider societal issue within the game as well.
“At some point, someone within the higher ranks needs to determine what we want to represent, and I’m pleased that someone in our club has taken a stance.”

Ciraldo mentioned it would be up to the individual players to decide if they wish to restrict fans from messaging them directly on social media.
The Bulldogs will aim to rebound from a disappointing loss against the Knights last weekend as they prepare to face South Sydney in a classic Good Friday matchup.
Young forward Harry Hayes has been sidelined due to injury and will be replaced by debutant Logan Spinks on the Bulldogs’ six-man bench.
