Marc Guehi emphasised the importance of unity for England following their defeat to Japan in a World Cup warm-up match on Tuesday.
Kaoru Mitoma’s goal in the 23rd minute secured a hard-fought triumph for Japan at Wembley, marking England’s first loss to an Asian team.
With key players like Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, John Stones, and Jude Bellingham absent, England’s final encounter before Thomas Tuchel announces his World Cup squad raised more questions than it answered, as the team struggled to impose their game plan against Japan.
“We can’t sugarcoat it,” acknowledged Guehi, who stepped up as captain in Kane’s absence. “It’s always disappointing.
“You want to be winning those games, but the primary focus is on the World Cup and preparing ourselves for that.”
The Manchester City defender continued: “We’ve demonstrated in previous years that even if our final games leading up to a tournament haven’t been the best, we’ve still gone on to show our readiness.”
“It’s crucial that we maintain our composure, support one another, and stand united during these challenging times, because it’s undeniably tough.
“But like I said, it’s all about perspective; that’s how I see it.”
Guehi, who captained England in the absence of Kane, expressed his surprise at Tuchel’s decision to appoint him as skipper.
“It was unexpected first and foremost; I didn’t know until just before the match,” he recounted. “That was when he informed me.
“I assumed it would be Pickers (England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford), because who else could it be?
“It’s a tremendous honour, and I am truly thankful. It’s not something I’ve ever envisioned, so it is incredibly special for me.”
As the runners-up in Euro 2004, England are considered among the top contenders for the World Cup in North America as they strive for their first title since 1966.
However, the loss to Japan and the preceding 1-1 draw with a typically strong Uruguay underline England’s struggle to secure a victory against a top-20 FIFA-ranked team under Tuchel.
“I’m not concerned about that,” Tuchel responded regarding his record against elite teams.
“I’m disappointed with the outcome; everyone is, but I think it’s important to keep it in perspective,” he added, noting that he was unable to field his preferred lineup against Japan.
“We faced two teams ranked in the top 20,” Tuchel remarked. “They’re well-drilled and formidable opponents, fully equipped with their best players.”
