The Jillaroos have triumphed over the Kiwi Ferns to claim the Pacific Championship title, capitalising on a series of mistakes that left the New Zealand side scrambling for much of the match.
In front of a sold-out audience at Parramatta’s CommBank Stadium, the Kiwi Ferns struggled to penetrate the Australian defence effectively, ultimately falling short of the championship.
Ashleigh Quinlan’s early sin-bin, just one minute into her appearance, compounded the Ferns’ difficulties. Additionally, a contentious hip-drop tackle resulted in Ivana Lauitiiti being sidelined for 10 minutes, leaving New Zealand a player down for a significant portion of the game.
“They’re virtually unstoppable, aren’t they?” remarked Emma Lawrence on Nine.
“The Jillaroos entered as heavy favourites… They’re a collection of true stars, and it’s challenging to pinpoint any vulnerabilities in that line-up.”
The Australian team wasted no time, scoring the first try within three minutes of kick-off through Olivia Kernick, edging ahead 6-0.
Julia Robinson then bolstered the Jillaroos’ momentum, deftly navigating through the Ferns’ defence to increase the score.
“Is there anyone who performs better in contemporary rugby league? Her hands are like webs. They just adhere to the ball,” commented Brad Fittler on Nine.
The Kiwi Ferns found themselves down to 12 players immediately after Quinlan was sent to the sin bin for a late tackle on Jakiya Whitfeld.
As the Ferns approached Australia’s line, Whitfeld made a break toward the centre, with Jess Sergis perfectly positioned to capitalise on a slick pass, darting down the field.
At half-time, the Jillaroos led 24-0.
The second half commenced with Kiwi Shanice Parker finally putting New Zealand on the scoreboard. However, Tamika Upton quickly responded with a brilliant solo effort, maintaining a 26-point advantage for the Jillaroos.

“They seem unstoppable,” Fittler acknowledged on Nine.
Tysha Ikenasio managed to score for New Zealand, yet persistent errors plagued the team, with Apii Nicholls failing to convert both attempts.
As the final minutes approached, Ivana Lauitiiti was also sin-binned after delivering a dangerous hip-drop tackle that sent Olivia Higgins crashing to the ground.
Meanwhile, Annessa Biddle suffered a significant blow as she was struck in the head by Ellie Johnston’s knee while attempting a low tackle and was further injured when Johnston’s knee hit her face as she lay on the ground.
Johnston then powered over for a try from close range, followed by Robinson securing her second of the day, culminating in a dominant 40-8 victory for the Jillaroos.
Robinson was named player of the match.
